Old school hip hop is going to happen here sooner or later, the format is spreading too fast for it to NOT happen. I don't know about 105.1 though. I could see Magic 101.3 heading in this direction... I know that they are pulling decent numbers, but from what I've seen, many of these old school hip hop stations are replacing the urban ACs, including some that are top-rated stations in their markets. I think that urban AC is suffering from the same problem that soft rock has been suffering in recent years, it just isn't appealing to young audiences. I mean, just take a listen to Magic 101.3... it is hard to even tell who they're trying to market to, I don't know many people who particularly enjoy listening to Zapp and Roger (I heard "Computer Love" on there the other day, amazingly) and Sam Smith... back to back. But you'll hear just that on 101.3. The question is, though, will old school hip hop be a lasting format?
Let's not forget, though, that iHeartMedia has NOT started getting all of the translators up and running around here. In fact, we've pretty much been translator free (unlike many cities), but there are construction permits floating out there for these right now, and iHeartMedia has at least one for WTFX. I would imagine that 93.3 (or whatever the translator frequency was) is going to be a simulcast of something that'll be on the WTFX-HD2. I think that is alternative right now (in fact, I think it is very similar to Alt 98.7, and I could see them possibly trying that here at some point as well particularly since Fox is less alternative sounding lately), but what they do when they're trying to market a whole separate radio station as something "new" is anybody's guess... I'd put good money on either alternative or old school hip hop though.
