How About KRDU-1130 switching to News/Talk?

KMJ has had many News/Talk competitors over the years but I am surprised that Clear Channel hasn't started a News/Talk radio station in Fresno yet. If anyone can be a serious threat to KMJ, it would be a Clear Channel News/Talk station especially if they were to raid KMJ of syndicated "Rush Limbaugh" (whenever his contract with KMJ expires). In the Bay Area, CC was able to get Rush for AM 910 from Cumulus KSFO-560. Question is, which station of CC would switch to News/Talk in Fresno? I have been thinking of Religious KRDU-1130. Is CC making enough money from the brokered religious format at KRDU? It makes me wonder?

And A Clear Channel News/Talk Station Could Effectively Kill Off KYNO-940, Especially If A CC News/Talk Has A Stronger Talk Lineup.

KRDU has a long following of loyal listeners, and I really doubt that will change, besides they really don't have the signal to compete with KMJ 580, KMJ-FM 105.9, and KYNO, the more likely candidates from CC Fresno for News/Talk on AM would be the FOX Sports combo KCBL 1340 and KRZR 1400, but I think that format is pretty much locked in as well, and on FM 102.7 KHGE The Wolf does has very low numbers, but with 105.5 The Truth being the 4th News/Talk station in Fresno, I don't think it will happen.

Surprisingly I can hear KRDU much more clearer than KYNO-940 though KMJ @ 580 is even more clear than KRDU as far north as Stockton. How far south or east does KRDU reach?

I get the feeling that CC is testing how well 910 does before taking the concept to other markets. New AM stations in major markets have never done well. There was "Rush Radio" in Boston, with what was considered a top-tier lineup and lots of promotion. It went nowhere. But if there was ever a situation where success is handed to you on a silver platter, CC has it with KGO abandoning the format. So they have a unique situation here and they're doing their best to exploit it. Now, the big question is whether they can get people to check out that new spot on the dial. If this doesn't work in the Bay Area I look to see yet more AM stations go the time-brokered route.

KRDU during daytime is at 5000 watts non directional and basically covers from Turlock to Bakersfield, and at night they are at 6200 watts with a directional pattern favoring the S/W From Fresno to The Central Coast (SLO) and Bakersfield, The TL is in Dinuba.

There could be potential chance in the future for KRDU to be News/Talk, but maybe only syndicated talk programming ,like 105.5 KJZL The Truth, no local talk or news, not with CC Fresno cutting local talent at almost all stations, using central Hub formats.

CC Modesto has two local shows on its News/Talk 1360 KFIV. The Morning News from 5:AM-9:AM and "Afternoons Live With Dave! Diamond" from 3:pM-6:pM. CC's Stockton News/Talk 1280 KWSX simulcasts KFIV's afternoon talk show but carries CC's "Armstrong & Getty" for mornings.

I think that KJZL-105.5 The Truth would be no threat to a CC News/Talk station on 102.7. The only threat would be the current KMJ-FM 105.9. I think CC would have in their budget "Two Local Shows" (look at CC Modesto's KFIV-1360), one in morning drivetime and the other in afternoon drivetime though I can see them bringing in Sacramento's "Armstrong & Getty" for mornings.

I also agree with you Dave. Brokered formats seem to be the future for AM Radio. That is why I am surprised that CC dropped a brokered religious format at then KUYL-1280 Stockton for News/Talk KWSX. AM 1280 The Lighthouse was a clone of Fresno's KRDU-1130 from 2002-06.

KWSX is essentially a translator - for either KFBK or KFIV, depending on the time of day. So there aren't really any programming costs involved. I too was a bit surprised that they dropped the brokered format, but then again they're the only radio station in Stockton with any kind of news-talk format. So it probably garners some ratings & they're able to sell it.

You notice I said "large market" when I was talking about successful new AM's. I still think AM radio provides a valuable resource, and can be very profitable when they're the only game in town in a smaller market. Witness KVGC in Jackson.

KWSX also simulcasts some of KSTE. Surprisingly, all three of those stations boom into Stockton pretty strong except that KFIV disappears at night though during that time, KWSX simulcasts KFBK.
