David and anyone else that wants to chime in: About 15 years ago, my parents (who were about 60 then) happened to get sent an Arbitron diary. Since I was much more a radio listener than they were, they gave it to me. I have never since seen one (I know, I am now in decidedly in the wrong demo). But these days how are LA ratings determined. This inquiring lstener really wants to know. By the way, for what it's worth, my car presets include KFWB, KNX,KTLK,KGIL,KPCC, KCBS, KRBV(since the switch) KRTH , KKGO and KUSC (so you see I have rather across the board tastes) At home, I listen to several XM Radio channels (especially the 60s on 6) via my DirecTV system.
Until October, when the PPM starts, the system is...
Arbitron recruits at the household level about 1500 potential respondents a week. The contact is by phone, although there may be a warm up letter sent to get people receptive to the phone call. A separate diary is sent to each member of the household, as indicated in the recruiting call if the home accepts. Arbitron keeps tabs of the ages, ethnicity, geography, etc. so they can recruit for each week in proportion to the market. When the diaries are sent, a follow up call is made to confirm arrival and participation, and calls are made throughout the Thursday to Wednesday week of diarykeeping.
Of the 1500 or so diaries, abut 700 come back. If there is poor proportionality, Arbitron balances recruits for later weeks of each 12 week survey-. For the 12 week book, about 7500 diaries are process and tabulated.
