How big is it?

The LA Radio Universe, that is....get your minds out of the gutter!

I get that a ratings point equals a percentage of the total listening audience, but is it published somewhere how many people (total) are listening for each time period?

Like if the #1 show in the AM has a 5.0 rating, that is 5% of all people listening, right? Well, how many total people are listening to ALL stations?

AM I making sense or is this something that is listed somewhere...Thanks!

SG

Oh, if anyone has the answer, can you also break it down by AM's, Midday, PM Drive, Late night and overnight?

Thanks!!!

A ratings point is 1% of all people in a market in the age, gender or ethnicity being considered.

A share point is 1% of the people in the market who are listening to radio in a particular moment.

No station has a 5 rating. 5 share for a few, but that means a rating of about 1.2 to 1.3 in mornings, for example. A 1 rating is about 105,000 persons in any daypart.

Since rating is a percentage of the universe, not a percentage of radio listeners, a ratings point is always the same value. Share varies by daypart. For example, a 6 share 7-Midnight is less people than a 4 share in morning drive.

Nice! Thanks David!

This is what I was looking for. So....

If a 1 rating = about 105,000 people...that means there are 10,500,000 people listening? I thought that was how many people we in the market.

I guess what I am also asking is: If there are more people listening to morning drive, how many total listeners are there for each daypart? I am really interested in the evenings and overnights. Obviously there aren't 10 million people listening at that time. Does the Arbitron book show the approx #?

So let's cut to the chase....how many people are listening from say Midnight to 3am and from 3am to 6am? Is there a way to know???

Not exactly. A ratings point is one percent of the population, while a share is one percent of those listening to radio in the time period.

I rating point is 1% of the population. 1 share point in AM drive would be about 0.25% of the population, while at night it would be about 0.1% of the population.

Remember, the 10.5 million is the 12+ population.

In AM drive, all stations combined had a 21.7 rating, equivalent to 2,366,000 persons using radio on average in any quarter hour of the morning drive period.

Midnight to 6 AM the market rating is 2.2 points for all stations combined, or about 243,000 persons listening on average. 7 to Midnight the total radio rating is a 6.9 or about 750,000 persons listening on average.

SG

Mid to 3 1.5 rating and average 167,000 listening to radio at average.
3 to 6 2.9 rating and average of 316,000 listening. Much is in 5 to 6 AM, as 3 and 4 AM have similar levels to midnight to 3 am.
