Yeah, this is the Cleveland board BUT...we've talked about Zoomer radio [AM740] out of Toronto [and can be picked up here OTA fairly decently] before and I about drove into a tree about 4 or 5 AM this morning when I heard them playing a 90s tune "How Bizarre" by OMC. Never thought I'd see the day that'd happen but makes me wonder what decade they'll start cutting back on now. I know they used to do 50s at 5, 60s at 6, 70s at 7 and a mash up of all the decades at 9. Now it's 60s at 6, 70s at 7, 80s at 8 and Robbie Lane has vacated the 9 PM section and someone else is playing what sounds like a regular mix of music. I can only assume they'll have a 90s at 9 eventually.

OMC was from New Zealand, so he doesn't fall under CanCon. However, "How Bizarre" was an AC crossover, so that's the only logical reason that song would be in such a format.
Zoomer Radio was actually very interesting when it debuted. Now it's just a mess of things nobody wants to hear on AM.

Remember hearing How Bizarre on Radio Disney back in the day. They too, had an interesting mix of songs from dance hits to novelty songs, along with mainstream pop at the time. A little of something that both parents and kids could enjoy. That eventually ended in the early 2000s, when they started shifting to music from teen idols starring in Disney Channel original shows and movies, with some mainstream hits sprinkled in.
Which one?
There's SOME things I like hearing on AM. I think they may be catering to their FM side more nowadays even though it allegedly only covers downtown Toronto at 82 watts but they are at 1030 feet above ground level on top of a pretty tall building. Be interesting to know if it makes it out into any of the suburbs.
For me, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, "Zoomer Radio", AM 740, out of Toronto Canada has not been coming in very well at all for some time now.
CFZM is owned by Moses Znaimer, the co-founder of the former CHUM Media empire up north. It's a personal plaything for him along with CFMZ, a commercial classical music station.
Along with their low-power FM rebroadcaster in Toronto proper (which I forgot to check out when I was in Toronto last month), they just added a partial simulcast in Owen Sound. OMC doesn't sound out of place there...

101.7 out of Newark (sorry, New Albany-Newark 😄). They still play plenty of their usual 70s and 80s classic hits, but they started going deep into the 2000s decade within the past month. Even with my age (47), I just find it hard to consider "It's Been Awhile" a classic hit.

I didn't like that song when it was new, let alone now. Not to hijack a Cleveland thread any further, but it is definitely part of the evolution of "classic hit" stations regardless of what someone my age thinks.Zoomer Radio did have a '90s At 9 show about a decade ago. It was most AC stuff like Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, etc.

"How Bizarre" is now 30 years old and was one of the most played songs in its day (according to the Billboard airplay list). Certainly qualifies as a classic. But as with any classic music format, as the years go by and newer sounding songs are naturally added, some people can't accept the fact that things are moving along.
"The years start comin' and they don't stop comin'" - Smash Mouth "All Star" (another song being added to classic hit stations).
"I'm Too Sexy"... "Tubthumping"... "Barbie Girl"... "Macarena"... "Mambo No. 5"... there were many novelty one-hit-wonders in the '90s.
I was tuning past KMAS 1030 in Shelton, WA (Classic Hits) the other day looking for KNWN 1000 for a news fix when I heard it play "It's Been Awhile" too.
So, I'm guessing the song tests well. (Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that focus group....)

I've been able to pull it in at night (in central Massachusetts)
Music is not tested I focus groups. It is now tested online with each respondent going at their own pace scoring songs one by one on this phone or tablet or whatever. Samples are usually around 100 or a bit more.
A focus group is usually 8 to 12 people in a room with a strong moderator and a topic list for discussion.
Music tests are quantitative, looking to see what a group of people scores each song at. Focus groups are qualitative, and look to “find out what is under the rock.”
