How 'bout those new ratings bugs!

If you like this, you're gonna love the new rules that take
effect July 1 requiring automobile advertisements to have
the crash test rating and mileage ratings at no less than
1/4 screen size for the first and last five seconds of each
spot.

can you point me to a news or document source for this FCC regulation? because i cant find one anywhere.

It has to be a regulation of some sort, as EVERYONE's doing it. If it wasn't for whatever it is, the ABC would still be the only one with the big, frequent ratings bug.

Though, not pertaining to TV, one rule I would like to see is, in the radio car ads, for the announcer to speak loudly and slowly when he explains the disclaimers.

This isn't the FCC's doing

After some searching, it turns out the FCC isn't behind this at all. It's the NCTA.

I, for one, intend on sending a written (not e-mailed) complaint to the NCTA, with copies to all the basic cable networks I watch on a regular basis, and my service provider.

The letter will express my distaste for this very unsavory affront to my viewing (that huge ratings bug coming out of every commercial break is already giving me a headache), suggest that NCTA and its affiliates are creating an annoyance to the viewing public in general in an attempt to appease a vocal minority (who apparently cannot be bothered to program the V-chips in their television receivers), and that unless this piece of bullsh*t is made less obtrusive, I will be lessening my viewing of advertiser-supported networks (that should get the attention of those networks).

I think I might toss copies at the big four broadcast networks as well, while I'm at it.

NCTA's address, should anyone here care to take similar action, is:
National Cable & Telecommunications Association
1724 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036

I found a list of addresses for the most popular cable networks on the DirecTV website:

Thanks for correcting me on this. I was told in my job that it was the FCC's doing. Nevertheless it is annoying.

Are there new additional ratings restrictiosn for TV-Y7 shows? Today (6/5), I flipped through around 12:45PM ET and noticed that Cartoon Network had a butt-ugly TV-Y7 logo in the corner (presumably after a break) during "Scooby Doo". A couple of minutes later, it was still there. (It eventually disappeared.)

There has GOT to be a better way to promote the TV ratings -- all the new regulatiosn are doing is alienating those who don't even need them, as it all but ruins TV aesthetics.

When I was in radio, I would turn up those disclaimers so people could hear them. I was also guilty of slowing a few down when it was my turn to load them. :)

As far as the TV ratings go, if your TV V-chip is set up correctly, it will know the rating of the TV show. I think it's important to have the V-chip as there are more than 3 networks now and more than one TV in a house. Kids are quick with the remote, so even if mom and dad leave the room, the kids can't flip over to a show the parents feel is inappropriate.
So, while it may seem irrelevant to adult viewers, there are still a dozen or so parents that take an interest in their kids lives.
