How Can Clear Channel Lay Off A Part-Time DJ?

In the latest round of Clear Channel layoffs, included among those people let go were some DJs described as "Part-Time," "Weekend" and "Swing." How do you lay off someone who doesn't have a fulltime job?

I mean, if they had been doing, let's say, Sunday afternoons and you've decided to voicetrack that shift, do you also have to sever ties with that personality? Can't they simply be moved to an as-needed status? You still have shifts to fill here and there. Fulltimers still get some sick days and vacation time. Even if you're still keeping a DJ or two who just do weekends, even they will want some time off eventually. I doubt, outside the very biggest markets, a parttimer who only works a few shifts per month costs you anything in benefits or pay, apart from paying them for those few hours they work.

I believe if a parttimer with SAG-AFTRA earns at least $10,000 a year, that person qualifies for medical and dental insurance. But that comes out of their union dues and extra funds they contribute. If they only work a few four or five hour shifts a month, I can't see how Clear Channel is paying anything extra to have them on the payroll.

And how many markets are unionized anyway?

Given that so many smaller CC markets are voice-tracked it is possible that the "part-timer" may have only been "part-time" on that station--he worked full-time voicing other stations in the group.
