How come Star 105.7 took so long to change it's calls?

Star 105.7 in Grand Rapids has been called WOOD for years and years. Why now have they changed their calls to WSRW? Anyone know? Were recent requests for call changes denied by the FCC?

Icy,

This is in advance of a rumored FM simulcast for WOOD-AM (1300) in Grand Rapids. The rumor is that WOOD will gain an FM simulcast at the current WMUS (106.9- Muskegon) with WMUS and their country format moving up to 107.9 in Muskegon, displacing Clear Channel's 'Star 108' which is pretty much a carbon copy of 'Star 105.7' whose signal literally overlaps that of 107.9. The WOOD-FM call letters would likely be placed on 106.9 with the new simulcast.

Simply launching the FM simulcast on the 265kw 105.7 would be a very risky move IMO. Star is the AC powerhouse in Grand Rapids and changing the format of such a successful, heritage station with such a monster signal would be foolish. Even for Clear Channel.

When WOOD 1300 went from 5000 watts DA-N to 20000 watts DA-1, they had to pull the pattern in to the west and east particularly in the daytime, and Ottawa County in particular lost signal strength. To the west are WMCS 1290 and WRDZ 1300 which they had to reduce overlap with. To better serve Ottawa and Muskegon County, 106.9 was a good choice. Also there is the growing trend toward talk on FM as it gets into steel buildings better. There are probably buildings in Grand Rapids where 106.9 is more easily received.
