How Deep Should A Playlist Go?

1000 cuts? 2000? I'm ripping CDs and dubbing vinyl and cassettes like crazy. Right now I'm at 1000 cuts that could air right now, 950 of which hit #40 or higher. But as I look at the stack of stuff not yet done, I've got almost 1200 more tracks, with about the same percentage of hits to lesser known titles. And breaking it down by decade it's about 40% 70s music, 40% 60s music and 20% from the 50s. I'm thinking, maybe 40 sets of 50 tracks each, then rotate two sets in and out every week. Suggestions needed and welcomed.

Suit yourself if you are the "decider". My pt 15 is now at about 2500 plus maybe 500 commercials and drop-in elements.
This runs about 6 and half days before repeating. My breakdown by decade is similar, but extends from 1920's to now, with heavy emphasis on 50s-70s. The lesser known tracks I find are VERY important to make sure we don't hear the No1 hits too much, then some songs, I never play the "big hit". "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones is never played, but I do play a really nice jazz version by Joe Pass, and an excellent vocal version by Phyllis Diller.

I think I'll be happy when I get to 5000 titles, maybe. ::)

I love you both, Captainfirst and tom wells..

You ask how deep should a playlist go:

How deep is the ocean
How deep is the grand canyon
How deep is outer space
How deep is a light year
How deep is our love for this music.

That's how deep. Yes, and after 2,567,876,745 plays , if I never hear Satisfaction,Wild Thing and Wipeout again, that's fine with me. Oh yeah, you can add It's My Party to the list.

A little clunky getting the stream started and a few brief stream holdups, but now after 10 minutes, seems to be rock solid.

Nice tight production.....and you're definitely a lot better on mic than I am.......

And I'm very impressed with the audio quality. There are few that sound as clean with this much high-end response.
Ooops, there's a little pause.. DSL is only so fast....

ELO - show down
didn't know the next song, the voice sounded familiar..sound like the tit was "smartmans blues" ??
sounds like "glen Frey"

gotta run enjoyed it ...bill maher is on.

Chuck, tried to sign in and go to chat, but the laptop/data connection got completely hosed.
Ran one of the CPUs up to 100% and locked there.....
Wish there was some way to stream audio without the video.
I'll download a file of a complete show.
I think I heard reverb on everything, and the level was "just right".

Any song that was popular in it's day or as an oldie now should be aired on oldies stations....meaning most, if not all the songs that charted within positions 1 and 20 on Billboard should be played. Just rotate them nicely, so that fewer of the cheesies get played back to back. Many good, well-known songs also charted beyond position 20 and those should be played as well.

thanks for the kind words tom and hornet 61.. most of my misspent youth was in radio, live music, anything related to those fields..threw up the station about two years ago just for fun..only promotion has been through face book to my friends that know my past,..usually have about 20 or so listeners every Friday night..had over 6000 hits in the last 18 months..over 50 followers..i use an OTS Audio program as the player, running two pc's.one as the broadcaster, the other as a monitor to see the chat board and reply. just a small 6 channel mixer with built in effects..an audio tecnica 2020 phantom mic. also have a vintage teac 350 top loader cassette and a teac a-6300 reel to reel at my disposal for production..i had several drop out problems until i rebuilt the broadcast pc with a new mobo, and cpu..now havent had but one on my end in the last several months..i'm able to EQ the stream on my end..having spent a long time in studios..pretty good at making it sound right..lol.at times the stream does sound different depending on settings outside my province..just have to deal with that..i can do a audio stream only..BUT..the listeners will not have it !! for some reason..they want to see me..lol..some listeners do suffer reception problems i try to educate them on how to have their pc's set to work properly..i'll have a new web site up by the end of the month with pics, info, tips , the link to the show etc there..thanks again..cl

Deltas69, that's a very good sounding stream and no problem at my end playing the archived video with my DSL connection.

In other news, I'm now up to 1500 records done, with 1000 or so to go. I will be playing most of the cuts that get overplayed but, at fifty sets of 50 songs each, with two sets per week, each and every song will get spun for a week then disappear for about half a year.

I have some vintage commercial spots and PSAs but no jingles. If the budget allows, I'll get some custom ones cut for me. But first, I have got to get a better microphone. I've been testing various processing chains for almost a year now and that's nailed down finally, and every song is at 320k. I'd love to do them as losssless files but that's just too much of a load on my hard drive.

Thanks for the kind words..I not up to speed on the tech end of internet streaming..but having spent many years in radio, and live music/studio production i do know what sounds good..i'm not usng anything special as far as outboard gear..my broadcast pc is about 6 years old although i have updated the mobo, cpu, ram and power supply to push the video aspects. I do have some a nice eq, as well as compression effects in my software that helps with the sound, using an audio technica side address mic model 2020..through a small 100.00 berehinger phantom mixer. not sure about receprion of dsl versus cable on the listening side..i do know from my end i need a good uplink..so i switched to cable about a year ago as dsl could not give me more than half a meg up...fine for audio..but the video would freeze the stream..i tried to just run audio..but the listeners complained about seeing me..go figure ..lol. i now have a mid tier comcast package with about 2 megs up and 20 megs down..seems to be working fine 99% of time.now working on a web site that should be up by the end of march with the link as well as some old pics and info to help the listener improve their reception..a lot of listener problems are simply not keeping their pc's cleaned out, un needed programs running in the background..etc..im not sure i will be able to post the playlist..but i hope so in an effort to provide listeners with a list of songs that will jar their memory..thanks again hope you can keep listening..and log into the chat board if you wish..cl

My best suggestion is EVEN MORE records, and never plan to stop adding.

Play the whole schmear, and if something annoys you, have an out of rotation folder where such tunes can cools their heels as long as needed.

I break folders into groups of 100 songs each, but always run the whole set.

When I add a song it might have 4-5 plays in a week, then as it settles in, I'll pull some of the extra plays out a month or two later.

About every two weeks I give the whole thing a shuffle.

Two nights ago a fine trainwreck came up. I was in the car, had just left for work.
Some song ended, the the file "11 seconds of dead air" played, the John Belushi yelling "Hey What's goin on?,
and being clipped off by a LOUD rock-n-roll 1980s Molson beer spot.

Sounded really good for an automated screw-up.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. If someone has a better suggestion, I'm open to it.
[/quote]

Make a seperate folder/catagory with the 'good ones' and allow them to play more often, sandwiching them in between the stiffs.
I'm assuming, of course, that by 'good ones', you mean 'hits'. But, even if they're just your faves, it'll still work.

there are some tunes i just don't like..period ..and would never play for myself..such as "the lion sleeps tonight" or "keep on dancin'" :(...however..EVERY song IS someone's favorite...assuming..they happen to be listening at that moment ::)...lol..thus i do have them in the playlist...and will ,with a great deal of reluctance, play them..should the request arise..i don't have to deal with a continuing 24/7 playlist rotation in my situation, as i record the Friday night show live, and it is archived for me, for re-runs through the week..which surprisingly is getting a lot of hits for the replays..
