How Did It End?

Scott:

I didn't know you worked at 103.1... nor I did I know Ralph "Wild Wing Cafe" Wimmer did, either.

Small world, indeed.

WPRH (ex WMMC) was my first part-time gig. Loved every moment of it even though it was always the 3rd CHR.

Yep, Ralph hired me from KZQ in 1987 to do afternoons at C103. When EZ Communications bought it and Ralph and I got terminated, Audubon's subsidiary(Barnacle Broadcasting) GM Beau Sanders hired Ralph to oversee and program WHTK in Hilton Head...Ralph took me to do PM drive/MD, Steve Stevens to do middays, Jay Michaels to do nights and Keli Reynolds to do overnights. IT was in Hilton Head that Ralph made his Wild Wing Cafe connection.

We built HTK from the ground up.

Great reading, Summers,...the "Epistle" was more than nessesary to render the correct understanding. I enjoyed it, and I owe you a beer.

Wow Scott all of that sounds interesting. I know you have been around quite a few stations and for the most part living near Kershaw with a nice HAAT I could pick up just about every station you worked at... Was an interesting read about the goins' on at WNOK. I remember the first time listening to you would have been 83. That was shortly after TK was running the show. For some reason it seemed the summer of 83 WNOK was (IMO) one hot station. Funny thing was I could remember the playlist during the day time hours and it never even occurred to me what kind of system they were using. Once it got to 6PM then I could not figure it out as the DJ seemed to have more control. Once the music changes took place in Sept it seemed the umph was gone till around the spring of 84 when they morphed into 104.7 WNOK as their slogan and that was when it started picking back up. To me the fall of 83 NOK would be in today's world Hot AC. Dunno if that would be accurate or not, but it hasd that feel to me...

Very gracious of you, Scooter, thank you. And I'm always up for a beer...or two...or more.

Yeah, I've always said that the road into and out of Columbia is littered with the carcasses of PDs from bigger cities that thought they were going to come into Columbia and show everyone what big city radio was all about and what music they should be listening to and how much of it they should be listening to. And, truth be known, the transition to the digital calls 104.7 WNOK happened in September '83, too. But, you're right, it sounded stagnant until the first half of 84 and WZLD kicked our ass in the Fall 83 book. Personally, I liked Tom Kent...first of all, he hired me when I needed a gig, he gave me my first quasi-managerial position with the MD stripes and he taught me how the "add" process worked. Plus, away from the station, he was a decent, God-fearing family man. That being said, at work, he was about as intense a guy as you could ever come across.

And it's funny you mention NOK as being Hot AC sounding in the fall of 83...because a few years later when Jonathan got entrenched in the PD slot along with having the morning show, being a fan of Dan Bowen and Atlanta's Star 94, he positioned NOK as somewhat of a Hot AC during the day with a truer CHR flavor at night, just like Star did. It worked for Star for several years and it worked for us, too. People can say whatever they want about JR, but not only is he a good and decent guy and friend, but he is a student of radio and a GREAT programmer. Consultants and corporate programmers everywhere across the nation could learn a lot from him if they'd only listen for a change.

And you're also right about Scooter. SCOOTER?! Get your credit card out!

Speaking of Jocks that ended in Columbia or I will add where is Robyn King now a days? You mentioned Pete Hamlet what ever happen to him and Jimmy Duncan who did overnights whatever happen to him? Kinda curious...

Not sure what Jimmy's doing nowadays, haven't seen him in years. I saw Robyn at a Carolina football game several years ago and I think she said she was selling real estate somewhere in NC. Pete's still in Columbia, I think he's working at the comedy club there in some sort of management capacity and handling the technical aspect of the performances.

Hi everyone,

It's Robyn (Not Robin King!). Robin is indeed working in the real estate business near Charlotte. Here is her website:

http://www.robinkingrealtor.com/

Since we are bring up spirits of WNOK's past, does anyone know what has happened to:

Mark Plemmons? (Last I heard of him, he was doing some voiceover work for WLTX and this was back in 2000-2001.)

Pandora Reynolds? (She was in Charlotte doing mainly voiceover work as well as some on-air at WRFX at one point.)

Leo Windham? (Is he still selling real estate?)

Any word from Woody Windham since he was let go from mornings at WISW?

Scott, I remember WHTK's first week on the air! It was basicly wall-to-wall music with one "Radio Get's Results" PSA from (I think) the NAB. The signal boomed in like a local at night in the early days, but not long after WHTK's sign-on, WKXC/Aiken-Augusta upgraded its signal, causing regular interference. Goodbye, semi-regular CHR option #6 for me!

Whether she spelled her name with a "Y" rather than an "I" or not is about as important as whether Summers is spelled with an "O". Lol. You knew who we were talking about. Maybe the people at the station mispelled it on purpose, after all, they were milking the "Rockin' Robin" moniker, but most, if not all interoffice communication at the time was addressed to Robin. Besides, if it's "Robyn", why is her web address spelled with an "I"? ;)

Haven't talked to Mark in years, but he was still doing voiceovers back when I saw him. I lost track of Pandora several years ago when she was in Charlotte at the Fox and I think Leo is still selling real estate...I ran into him last year on Facebook and he seemed to be doing well.

I loved working at WHTK and working for and with Ralph. The trouble with HTK was that it positioned itself as a Savannah station and it was a hard sell from Beaufort/Port Royal/Hilton Head. But, I'm a beach guy, so if there's an ocean, I'm there.

Hi Scott,

I was just saying hello in my original message. Sorry if I managed to get everyone confused, but I was just trying to make a small insignificant joke about the "Robyn vs Robin" spelling debate. Again, I appologize for the confusion.

I've submited several off-air airchecks of Robin when she was at WKSS/Hartford to Airchexx.com. This is one of the earliest from sometime in the late Summer/early Fall 1989 when she first arrived and was doing nights.

http://airchexx.com/2013/03/03/robin-king-the-power-request-hour-wkss-kiss-95-7-hartford-1989/

I've also submited another one when she was at WNOK, but so far it hasn't surfaced yet.

I said it before and I will say it again....Robin King was the best female air talent that had worked in the Columbia radio market (with Pandora ranking a very close second).

Scott that was a great read about nok.

Thank you, Gate...nice of you to say. It was a heady time then, at least for me. I am thankful for all of my time spent at WNOK.

No worries, Robyn...I was a bit confused, tho. :)

No doubt, Robin was one of the best, at the very least. She'd had some prior experience in Orangeburg(as I recall, her dad either owned or managed a station there)
and when she came to NOK, I was the one that trained her. I just told her to listen to only male jocks when she listened to other radio and told her to emulate them. Not being sexist, but back then, most females in radio either sounded breathy like they were trying to be sexy or they had that husky female rock delivery that was prevalent at the time. I just told her to jock records and have fun. I have no idea whether that helped her, but while she was at NOK, she never sounded like any other female in the state, to my knowledge.

Aircheck from Robin sounds great. I think she was in Harford already by the time I started at USC because I only remember Pandora Reynolds.

Funny things is about the time of that aircheck, I was doing part-time summers and winter holidays for the sister station of WKSS. Precision Media owned both WKSS and WERZ Exeter-Portsmouth-Dover-Rochester. Great company to work for.

Hi Scott,

There was an article about Robin posted in cyberspace that was written back in the late 90s while she was in Hartford. From my memory, Robin's father did mornings at WQKI in St. Matthews, SC and had got her start at a early age doing radio spots. During high school, Robin worked part-time at WORG in Orangeburg before heading to USC (and WNOK).

Steve,

You might enjoy this. This is a tribute site to WKSS during their years under Precision Radio. A friend that lived in the Hartford market at the time summed up Kiss 95.7's then-battle against the market's longtime CHR leader 96TIC-FM this way...."Kiss 95.7 was just like Avis Car Rentals.. They Try Harder".

http://www.rocketroberts.com/kiss957/kiss957.htm

Here's another aircheck of Robin from 1989, but not recorded by me.

No, but I'm sure if I do some closet mining, I can find a Fox 102 "Men Of Red Bank" calendar from 1993 that I think can be altered with some blacklight spray. Does that count? LOL ;D Oh, and it's "sis" and not "bro".

Actually, I stumbled across the article on Robin back when I was researching some of the past personalities that worked at WNOK about 8-9 years ago. It was in a Hartford women's business journal, IIRC, and went into details on her leaving WNOK for Hartford (by way of Pittsburgh) and her growth from doing nights into mornings, working as a full on-air host and NOT a female sidekick (as most women in the industry had been cast into).

Lol. I stand corrected..."sis", it is. I remember the Men of Red Bank calender. I worked part time at Fox back in 93 when I returned to Columbia after a stint in the Army. Had been friends with Benji, the late Mike Scott, Beard, Koko and company for years. They had a few of those calenders still lying around at the old location over near La Quinta off I-26.
