How Did It End?

I have to say though, I don't know what anyone sees in Russ Cassell. He is very arrogant and let us not forget he was fired from somewheres, seems like it might have been WFBC back in the day, not sure which one but he's even said he was fired. It was some upstate station but I want to say WFBC, may be different but seems like it. I know he went away a while then came back. Must have been that same arrogant attitude. I think it was when Peter Thiel was PD at WORD when they changed the Russ Cassell show to the Russ and Lisa Show. Anyways Russ never allowed Lisa to ever get a word in edgewise, he was so jealous of her being on there with him. Anytime she tried to say anything he'd railroad her down, honestly I don't know how that woman put up with him. Bobby "Baffoon" Mclain let him have the whole dang show back this year and it's been nothing but 4 hours of him ranting about the stupidest crap. Now he takes everything out on his listeners and treats them like crap, honestly I don't know how anyone could listen to him. If he was ever good I don't remember it and I'm turning 40, I have always lived here in Greenville. I can remember back to WQOK when I was a kid and I think that was the last time he had any following that amounted to anything. As far as the 1980's on I think stations like Rock 101, 107.3 WANS, My 102.5 (at one time a long time ago!), were the popular stations and Russ Cassell wasn't on any of them if I remember correctly. I liked oldies 93.7 but I've never really cared for B 93.7. It's really laughable to think that Russ was ever "talented", he's nothing more than an overgrown blow hard.

Agree 100% with everything you said, Cassell is ridiculously arrogant and rude. I was LOL'ing recently when he said "I can't believe nobody is calling in over this important issue!" Maybe everybody is sick of his arrogance and apparent superiority. Seems like he left to start his own station then came back.

There are a lot of good news/talk stations. I was extremely disappointed when WORD dropped Laura Ingraham for this crap on there now. The locals on WORD sound like they belong on a 1kw daytime-only AM in market #200. Anything positive about him I have ever heard was when he was on WQOK in the 1970s.

Yeah like I say I'll be 40 soon and I remember, when I was a kid, him being on WQOK but that was the last time I knew he had any "clout" if he even had that. He's overbearing and a straight up ass if you ask me. I've tuned in a couple times over the last couple weeks and callers have been fighting back and calling him out. What does he do? Just hangs up on them, he can't take the heat. What really gets me is how he tries to poor mouth and act as though he is one of the "working class" people. Pfft, he lives on Paris Mtn. The last time I checked homes weren't cheap up there. He's always bragging about the things he has but then gets on there and tries to put on some act. Then he does the other end and says "gas isn't too high". He's like Jekyll and Hyde, he's back and forth then all over the place. And Bob Mclain, while I think he's probably genuinely a nice guy, he's a bumbling boob. He couldn't program a radio station for anything in the world. I couldn't stand that oldies station he ran and I love oldies. Of course WORD kinda claims that they are Tea Party Central. Now while I may agree sometimes with a FEW, note I said "few", things some of those people say, I think a lot of them are way over the edge and need to come back down to earth. Of course politics on the whole are nothing but a mess these days. I don't swear allegiance to any party, I try to use common sense! I've always been basically pro constitution, low taxes, strong defense, govt staying out of peoples business, and let people live the way they want regardless of their lifestyle. You know I don't care who people date or marry, it's none of my business. If more people could learn the whole "mind your own business and I"ll mind mine" mantra I think this country would be a lot better off. Surprising you never hear any of those talking heads say that! Russ definitely couldn't say it, he thinks its his business to tell everyone else how to live. Reminds me of the "do as I say not as I do" thing! ;)

I just remember My doing the 25,000 song to introduce the station and they were asking for peoples feedback although the format they were doing the 25,000 songs with was the format... That was August of 1987 and I think the songs ended somewhere around the middle of Oct of 87. The format they had was pretty good and when Kiss FM in Asheville lost it's luster I gave MY a try and liked what they were playing. I just remember for about the first year although the music was good the processing stunk... It was like listening to one of those cheap superstar CD's with bad everything, but in Feb of 89 (Yes I remember these things) LOL a good sounding optimod was put into place and it really made the music sound a lot better. By that time L&H was doing mornings and I loved all the comedy bits and paradies they did...

I guess we can say whatever we want about Mr. Cassell. We all have a right to our opinions. He is obviously not everyone's cup of tea. But the simple fact that he stirs up so much discussion, mostly negative, shows he's getting noticed. Which is why he still had a job in the biz! Like him or not, he moves the needle!

is there a local conservative talent that would want to work in radio that the board would recommend?
I'm not a huge proponent of live and local talent unless it's GOOD talent, especially on a news/talk station. That seems to be overlooked on a lot of these boards that want local. Local isn't always better (and I think hosts like Russ Cassell and Bob McLain are good examples of this). I'd take the nationally-syndicated Laura Ingraham over Cassell any day. I think it's a shame WORD ditched her so quickly. I could see Glenn Beck working in this market as well, probably better than Ingraham.

Keven Cohen is available. His politics(and conservative politics in general) aren't exactly my cup of tea, but he's a good dude and has, IMHO, made an exceptional transition from sports talk to political talk radio...and has a decent listener base.

Well I'm sure Russ Cassell is popular with you preacherdude but thats for obvious reasons. I personally wouldn't necessarily like someone just beacuse they said what I liked! Russ Cassell and all the boobs at WORD have become nothing but something to laugh at, they're all crazy people with problems who think that everyone is out to ruin this country. I think they are way too alarmist and do the community no good with their daily dose of diatribe. In other words they make a mountain out of a mole hill. They don't use any common sense and automatically go to the fringe element of weirdos in this community. To me WORD is nothing more than a bunch of idiots screaming "oh the sky is falling", it's really sad and laughable at the same time. In my estimation the WORD local regulars on air are weirder and more scary than half those people they have on Coast to Coast AM on that station at night. In fact most of those people sound way more intelligent than the average WORD "supposed" talent.

I'm not sure what the obvious reasons are for me to think Cassell was and is a good broadcaster. I have made no comments or judgements on his topics of discussion these days. Excellent broadcasters exist in liberal and conservative media. My appreciation for Cassell has more to do with his work at WFBC when I was a teenager. He was good. And a large enough number of folks apparently still think he and his co-workers at WORD are pretty good or Entercom wouldn't continue to employ them.

And while I have the floor, let me just point out that because I am a pastor or a Christian doesn't make me a right-wing wacko! My liberal friends think I'm conservative, and my conservative friends think I'm a liberal. That pretty much slaps me right in the middle.

I would encourage my Clemson-loving friend to not jump to assumptions. And let's please get this discussion back to radio and away from politics and religion. This is radio discussions.com. Not religion and politics.com.

Have a good evening.

I understand. I am a preacher and I don't always trust them. Heck I even question myself sometimes! The only one I trust completely is Him!

Since God allegedly created Man in His image, I figure He has a sense of humor...so I don't feel guilty laughing at that...nor am I too concerned with

Yeah and they're always begging for money. Send me this and I'll send you this little patch of cloth or various other sundries. Makes no sense to me why people continue to get fooled by these idiots on TV, they're no more for God than the man in the moon. Oh they do it in the local churches too, try to make you feel like shit if you don't give them all kinds of money. I became Catholic for that reason, Catholics don't have hangups like the protestants. They also don't beg and promise things that they can't come through on. And yes my dad is a protestant minister ;)

MY 102.5 actually launched with 41,000 songs in a row, partly because there was no sales department or jocks, partly for the promotional value, but mainly because there was no real studio. We were up on the mountain at first with a couple of Studer CD players and cart machines, a mic for emergencies only, and an outhouse.

The morning guy the first year after the stunting ended was Ron Foster, who'd been a successful morning jock in Cleveland, OH and was brought in by consultant Mike McVay. Ironically, after L&H came home from Jacksonville and displaced Ron, he landed in Jacksonville doing mornings on a soft AC in Jacksonville for years afterward, also serving as PD.

At the time MY came on the air, Russ was far-and-away the number-1 morning show over on WFBC, and they also had a great sales department to take full advantage of those numbers. Russ was a pro, if a little high on himself, and he sure talked about Clemson a lot. He probably had no idea what was about to hit the market. When L&H were on their game, they were very, very good.
