How did WNWV nearly double its ratings in a month?

from http://www.radio-info.com/markets/cleveland

WNWV-FM 2.0 178,900 1.8 172,500 3.5 183,900 Adult Alternative Elyria-Lorain

I know they ran commercials during the summer, but that did not seem to have much effect on the ratings then. Is this an anomaly or the part of a actual trend? Cume did go up slightly but not enough to explain that kind of increase. Is there something wrong with the new PPM system?Even if WNVW were to fall to a 2.5 for December that would still be a marked improvement over the previous months.

P.S. I checked another site that had the Arbitron ratings, so it is not a typo.

We'd like to thank the folks from 107.3 for checking in. :)

Best guess, a new panelist for PPM is exposed to WNWV, when a previous member of the panel wasn't.

Ha Ha. A listener, yes, but not an employee.

If one person can have that kind of effect, there is something wrong with the measurement system. I can buy an increase to 2.5, but anything above that is rediculous. I noticed that WNCX took a large drop from 6.4 to 5.0, and while WNWV does play of number of classic rock artists, that stills seems to be too much.

I think WNWV went up in the ratings because of WMVX's switch to all-Christmas (and WDOK doing the same thing) and WNCX changing their morning show. A lot of 'NCX's listeners were not happy with the arrival of Maxwell, and a lot of Mix listeners were not happy with the Holiday switch. It makes sense with WNWV playing a lot of classic rock and 80's tunes. It will be interesting to see what happens in January and February with PPM results.

You're also talking about 12+ ratings, that nobody really goes by.

Yes, one panelist dropping and one coming on can totally make a difference. You need to look at stations that have consistency. Being 4th for one month is better than being 1st one week, 5th the next, 2nd the next..etc.
That station with a consistent 4th could end up in first overall.
That's the beauty of PPM.

Never go by publicly available ratings. They don't mean anything because no station targets EVERYONE.

I hope this isn't a fluke, I've been listening to V more lately and I've turned a few friends onto it. They have a decent selection of music, although some newer stuff would be welcome.

More variety, maybe, but that's what's killing them.
Better music? Well, we are each entitled to our opinions.

OK, better music to my ears, and yes, maybe it's the variety that makes it seem to work for me. They play a lot of the stuff that I remember from the early years of WMMS that you don't hear any more, as well as 80's, and a lot of the good stuff from today/recent. Maybe the station works better for people who remember a lot of that stuff. A lot of tunes that aren't as "mainstream". But then, I'm prolly not in the majority.

If V-107.3 is allegedly doing as bad as some of the naysayers claim, then a big ol' billboard along a heavily-traveled part of I-480 for the station would NOT have been commissioned. But I digress.

I don't know how inaccurate or accurate the trends are for PPMs, including the infamous 12+ books. But I for one would like to see how next month turns out. Especially with three stations slugging it out for Christmas music listeners... oof.

The billboard could have been in the "launching" budget, but I assure you, they aren't doing good currently. I'm not saying it's a bad station or good station. I just don't like the music, and I know the ratings. Hopefully everything works out.

To each his own. I personally can't stand WMMS' current lame-o ripoff of the old "Z-Rock" format. (Why in the hell would ANY station think that a dead seque from War's "Low Rider" into Rob Zombie's "More Human than Human" is a good idea is BEYOND me. Not even a poorly-programmed iPod would do THAT.)

It wasn't just Maxwell's dismissal that turned me off from that station completely. But that sure as hell was the final straw. Beyond nine hours of "hot talk" in drive time, and the Cleveland Browns flagship rights, 'MMS has nothing to offer whatsoever.
