How Do 540 XEWA and CBK Co-Exist?

@ Gregg, vis-a-vis WLIE 540 :

I once heard them (as WLIX) on the old Delaware Memorial Bridge in the early afternoon, mid-summer 1969. One would think that reception on the bridge would favor the closer realm of WDMV Pocomoke City.

Certainly, the WDMV of the time was just a 500-watt daytimer. But consider that WLIX was just 250 watts then!

I've never heard of AM 1000 Chicago getting as far as KC. I would think Oklahoma City would take over there.

Me too....but not a trace of KTOK last Monday morning. They do, however, have a rather funky pattern.

The back lobe "ERP" of the WMVP pattern at 260 degrees is 48.1 kW BASED ON CLASS A MINIMUM EFFICIENCY. This minimum is the same efficiency as KOA's unlimited efficiency of 362.10 mV/m @ 1 km @ 1 kW. So if KOA is 50 kW, WMVP is 48.1 kW at 260 degrees. Even the null at 195 degrees is the Class A equivalent of 26.4 kW. It would be much more if we considered Class B minimum efficiency. Any way you cut it, the WMVP daytime nulls aren't very deep.

You're right, and it's sorely outdated. There are huge chucks of the Oklahoma City area east and west of the antenna site that get very little signal at all. But here in East Texas KTOK is usually equal to or on top of XEOY.

Having to protect both WMVP and KOMO skywave service at night, it's very difficult to design a pattern that doesn't have very narrow lobes. It's typical of the Class Bs squeezed in between two former Class I-Bs, except most of those only have one major lobe.

As someone else stated the pattern must have been changed for WMVP.
Back in the early 70s, then WCFL was quite a bit weaker than the other Chicago 50KWs even during the day when I lived in De Kalb, Il.

Absolutely. And in "real world" terms, they do get out to the west fairly well on day pattern. But I agree with Radioman that they got out even better in their WCFL days. Listenable in eastern Iowa, except in the extreme south (Burlington-Keokuk area), where they got splatter from WCAZ. At night, WCFL was regular and clearly audible at in eastern Iowa, but subject to occasional "trashing" from XEOY. In my four years of college out there, I have no specific recall of having ever heard KTOK.

Back to the original topic. Tonight, I'm in St. Louis. Last stop on my 11-day road trip. 540 is a mess here. No station on top...and in fact, so far, I haven't been able to identify either XEWA or CBK. Just a bunch of noise and some splatter from KTRS.

Which Chicago stations can you hear during the day in St Louis? Does 1160 make it down there?
What about AM1000? I know there's a station on 1010 nearby.

Thanks.

I was listening to local KZQZ 1430 this morning. It was before dawn and I did flip briefly to WSCR which was blasting right in. From past experience, I can tell you the four "big boys" all make it to St. Louis, with WGN and WBBM getting splatter from 730 and 770 respectively. 1000 usually gets covered up by the local 1010. I've heard 1160 in its WJJD days, but only on day power shortly after sunrise.

Actually one of those WJJD broadcasts was fairly interesting....Clark Weber doing the morning show and getting birthday...or maybe it was anniversary...call-ins from Dick Biondi, Dave Baum and Ron Riley.

As for KZQZ, they were trumpeting the fact that they're about to go up to 50kw (daytime). They usually make it into the Chicago area nighttime, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. According to Radio-Locator, most of the daytime juice will be going ENE-WSW.

I used to hear St Louis' 1430 back in the day when they had different calls. I can't remember if it was KWK or WIL.
Anyway I do remember hearing WLS a long time ago while driving south of St Louis during mid day.
In any event that 1430 won't get to me as I'm too close to the 1430 in Highland Park.

Still just a mixture of two or three Spanish language stations in Houston - no trace of CBK.

KWK was on 1380 and used to be a nighttime regular around Chicago (unless you were close to the 1390 stick). WIL was the longtime occupant of St. Louis 1430, and also a nighttime regular....along with WIRE from Indianapolis. Don't discount hearing KZQZ when it goes to 50KW day pattern. If radio-locator's maps are correct, they'll still throw more juice in the direction of Chicago than they've been doing at 5kw. The big null is to the southeast.

Back to 540. I did check it out before dawn yesterday (Tuesday) in St. Louis, and found exactly what I had encountered the night before. Several stations, with none on top. I didn't hang out long enough to ID anything. Just long enough to establish that neither CBK or XEWA owns the channel in the gateway city.
