how do I record audio off of the internet?

We bought a new board, and I want to be able to record audio off of the internet. I basically want to be able to play something through the pot that the computer is running through, and record it in cool-edit.

It seems to me it may be a soundcard settings/issue. It only lets me do one thing at a time. For instance, if I have a youtube video open, even if it's on pause, it won't let my play/record using cool edit. I get this message... "The specified device is already in use, wait until it is free, and then try again.

It appears the soundcard is an ASI 4334.

The mixer is a brand new 10 channel Allen and Heath. ( I don't know the exact model...if that's important I can figure it out. It's just in a bad position to look at the back of it)

Thanks,

Randy.

If we were standing there beside you, seeing and hearing what you are experiencing, your question might be clearer.

Your computer is hooked up to the new board. You want to play Internet through the pot that your computer is using. Does that mean you are "fetching" sound from the Internet using this computer and the output goes to the board? And while this is happening you would like to capture what is cruising through your computer as a recording on the hard drive?

I have not come across a way for Cool Edit or Adobe Audition to do this. Maybe someone else has. What I have used that WILL do the capture is Total Recorder from High Criteria.

What is the computer Operating System?
Some audio drivers have the ability to allow exclusive use of the audio drivers.
If this is your case, you need to get into the audio card software "recording" tab and uncheck the box which allows your software to take exclusive use of the audio drivers.

Thanks,

I do this all the time...anything playing through the PC's speakers can be recorded in Adobe Audition.

I have a Compaq Presario with an old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. The Santa Cruz control panel (not Windows control panel) has a setting labelled "Record Source". If set to Line In, I can't record streaming audio, but if it's set to Stereo Mix, it works fine.

Your particular sound card probably has something similar, if it has its own control program. Hope this helps...

What the others said. Some sound cards will do it, some won't. Most Soundblaster cards will.
In the recording control panel select "What you hear" or try the other options. You may have to switch is back to the default setting for normal use. It's not "standardized".

I start Adobe Audition, then start the clip, click back to adobe to check my levels, on the laptop I'm using at the moment. You may have to play with the setup, but it always works for me, except... I can't seem to make Adobe Audition 1.5 to work right on my Windows 7 box.
