How do PPMs accurately record which station a listener is hearing? Does it track the local oscillator frequency (10.7 Mhz above the station tuned in) or does it decode an encoded audio message on the radio station? Or is it some other way altogether?
Station audio is encoded with an inaudible (to humans) code. The PPM "hears" it, and "phones home" each night with the info. Check out http://www.arbitron.com/portable_people_meters/home.htm for information from the source.
