Lots of moaning about 'GST here, but is 'SB or 'GKA really that much better? Outside of Boortz (who I hardly listen to anymore), WSB puts me to sleep. Hannity is a 3 hour right-wing commercial, Savage is..... out there. I kinda like Krok, but is there a true star on the station? Just started tuning in to 'GKA. I like Ingraham, everyone else is pretty much.... okay. Will they ever get a local personality, or is this just a plug in?
My question here is, how does Atlanta talk radio compare to other cities? Are we in need of a true local talk star? Seems like they have them in other majors, how do we compare?
Great questions & comments (except the Chris Krock thing--he is atrocious). Atlanta radio is a travesty--BOTH music & talk. Unfortunately, big companies control the stations in this market from their central offices. They have NO interest in the listeners of the Atlanta market. These "suits" believe that they can have their hands on the pulses of all markets from San Antonio, New York, and Hollywood. It's a shame that we don't "vote enough with our ears". This is the only way that this will change. My show would be a great remedy for this market, but unfortunately, I'm the wrong race, and too intelligent for the race in which I belong to get the opportunity I rightfully deserve. As long as general talk stations (white-based), for example, stick to race, and "black" talk stations stick to political affiliation, then the entire talk radio industry will continue to suffer. Satellite radio is stagnant because they are following the same methods that terrestrial radio is currently doing. We (the listening public) will continue to lose as long as we continue to reward (with our ears, and subscriber dollars) this industry for doing us like this.
In short, if these stations can follow these 4 simple rules, the industry could improve overnight:
1. You don't have to be a 46-year old white male to host a successful talk show
2. You don't have to be a black moron that's firmly enshrined on the liberal, and Democratic plantation forever to host a successful talk show.
3. Make the BEST hiring decision that's based on the QUALITY OF THE CONTENT of the show, or the ENTERTAINMENT VALUE of the aspiring talent.
4. In a market of this size (Atlanta is now market #9), I believe it's safe to assume that there are enough LOCAL issues to discuss that will hold the interest of this market. We don't need EVERY program to be syndicated here.
