How does Hendrie do it?

25 years ago I worked with a morning guy who did a character by putting tape on a capstan when he recorded bits (thus recording at slightly higher speeds) and then dubbed them to cart and played them back at normal speed (7.5 ips) creating the character's ("Harley") distinctive voice.

Hendrie isn't doing that and I've read that he doesn't "do" anything (no computers etc).

Does anyone KNOW how he does his show?

What? Did you say syndicated?

I thought Hendrie was a syndicated host?

Poetry in motion

I was fortunate to eye-witness his show -- it is totally different than ear-witnessing on the radio. He has up to three phone lines dedicated to himself and switches back and forth effortlessly -- switching phones and also switching voices. It's poetry in motion; and Phil's a top dog at what he does.

Hard to describe in the space here -- he's a master. I hope the NBC show succeeds.
______________

What's so beautiful about Hendrie is how he sucks people in that believe what they're hearing. The stuff he does is so absurd, and he openly talks about how he does his show, that for someone to buy into the act is the magic. The man is a genious.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you saying that he's so good at doing bits and pranking people that some don't get it, or that he's full of BS (not Boring Stuff) and yet people beleive him?

In other words, are you saying that he's really good, or really good at being really bad?

I'm saying he's really good at what he does. The first couple of times I heard him I completely bought into it. I've heard the funniest calls from people who were sold on his show being real. The guy is a one of a kind talent.

I still don't understand. Are you saying his show is not real, or are you talking about a bit that he does?

Garrett:
The whole Phil Hendrie Show is a spoof of talk radio. He goes on the air with a plausible-sounding (at first) topic and a guest on the phone. The guest starts off a bit off-center and gets progressively more outrageous. What casual listeners to talk radio (those hitting the scan button until they hear something different) don't know is that Phil is his own guest. He does dozens of voices (some of them female), interviews himself and has his timing down to the point where you'd swear it has to be two people because of the way the guest interrupts Phil. It's nothing short of brilliant. I heard him his second night on KFI in the mid-90s and have been hooked ever since.

G-Dawg: enjoy the ride

G-Dawg, sit back, grab a steak and a foil wrapped potato and and enjoy the theater of the mind ride that Hendrie does. It's to back that 103.7 dropped him back to 10 p.m. -- he is avail on 570 KLAC live and full of static in Sandy Eggo.

Hendrie's a genious. Pure and simple. A fracken' genious.
______________

Ok, I see.
I just wasn't sure if somehow you were all being critical of him. But I see what you are saying now, he's funny and entertaining!

I agree.
Too bad he's not on here, and I haven't listened to him online lately.
