How Does KSPN's Limited Signal Sound?

Recently 710 KSPN reduced its signal. Daytime went from 50,000 watts to 34,000. And the nighttime signal dropped from 10,000 watts to 2,500 watts. It was done so the transmitter site could be sold at a very good profit. So how is the reduced signal? I'm sure that nighttime signal misses a good deal of the sprawling Los Angeles radio market. Where did 710 relocate its transmitter?

ESPN programming is now heard in LA on three frequencies: 710, 830 and 1110, as ABC/Disney is in the process of selling 710 and 1110. The Los Angeles Angels own 830 KLAA and run ESPN most of the time. The exception is a local afternoon show, along with Angels and Ducks play by play sports. KSPN and KRDC simulcast local shows during the day and run ESPN nights and weekends. And 50,000 watt 1090 XEPRS in Tijuana-San Diego also has some ESPN programming, which can be heard in many parts of the LA market.

Good Karma, which owns sports and talk stations in Chicago, Milwaukee and a few other locations, is trying to buy one of these ABC/Disney stations.

You're right. Radio-Locator.com lists both transmitters. So we don't know when the new one will start broadcasting.

Actually Good Karma has already purchased KSPN.

When that was announced, there was a long thread discussing this signal issue.

As you can see, others feel the KRDC signal is better than KSPN. But that's not what Karma bought.

Never mind all that, which most of us knew already.

Referring to the typo in the thread subject line, I want to know how the signal of KEPN/1600 in Lakewood CO performs. :p

As of yesterday they are still operating with their original facility in Van Nuys/North Hollywood.

As I drove up Coldwater turning R on Burbank, I wondered if those 710 towers we still on. I checked the radio ... not much s/b splatter, usually splatter up to 770, nothing on 1420kHz. Station very loud and clear (in North Hollywood). Latter in Glendale I heard another program under 710. I thought it was another station. It could have been in the 710 audio chain. Daytime hours! If they have switched it will mark, I think, precisely the end of 80 years on Burbank Blvd. I remember seeing the old (now gone) tuning shack in 'Mars Attacks', albeit somewhat altered in the movie.

Dear Applicant (KSPN)
"...
This is in reference to the request filed June 27, 2022, on behalf of Good Karma Broadcasting,
LLC ("GKB"). GKB requests special temporary authority ("STA") to operate station KSPN(AM)
from its authorized construction permit site with temporary non-directional facilities. In addition,
GKB intends to verify the KSPN(AM) directional patterns authorized in its construction permit
pursuant to the Method of Moments proofing procedures. Therefore, the station is also
requesting the option to operate with parameters at variance as well.
Specifically, KSPN(AM) is requesting non-directional operation during daytime and nighttime
hours from its authorized construction permit site at a power not to exceed 25% of the authorized
power. Non-directional operation is necessary to facilitate implementation and adjustment of the
construction permit facilities and to protect workers during equipment installation and
adjustment. Additionally, the station is also requesting operation during daytime and nighttime
hours with the new moment method model derived operating parameters at the power levels
authorized in the construction permit.
Accordingly, the request for STA IS HEREBY GRANTED. Station KSPN(AM) may operate
non-directionally during daytime and nighttime hours from one of the elements in the
KRDC(AM) array with a daytime power not to exceed 8.5 kilowatts and a nighttime power not
to exceed 0.625 kilowatt. In addition, the station may operate directionally with the new moment
method derived operating parameters at the power levels authorized in the construction permit.

I don't think anyone has a firm answer to that question. I'd guess one of two things:
(a) They have an agreement with Good Karma to keep simulasting KSPN for a period of time
(b) No buyers have yet emerged willing to pay the price the Mickey Mouse Co. wants for KRDC. We don't know what that desired price is.

Did I read Boise Engineer's post correctly? KSPN 710 is going to broadcast temporarily from the KRDC transmitter site at 8,500 watts days non-directional and 625 watts nights non-directional? Or is that just a back up transmitter it hopes never to use?

Yes, 710 will run at very reduced power while they are working on the diplexing with 1110. Eventually, they will be at that side with 34,000 watts daytime and 2,500 watts at night.

There appears to be an agreement to simulcast while the diplexed system is being built to share the 1110 towers with 710.

I am surprised that Good Karma bought 710 instead of 1110. At the new site, 710 will be a horrible signal, missing the San Fernando Valley, much of the San Gabriel Valley, and Orange County at nigh. Daytime will be significantly less in coverage than it was from the San Fernando Valley site. 1110 is not the market's best signal, but it is vastly better than the new 710 signal will be.

The reduced power tests enable the engineers to ensure that the filters/rejection circuits are properly working and not allowing unwanted frequency mixing products.

Here in Houston, iHeart is finishing up a triplex project, and has been testing the two “added” signals with reduced power. Those tests are now complete and they have requested an STA to operate at the power levels specified in the construction permits, pending a license to cover, which will complete the project. There is similar info in the KSPN filing in post #8 above.

I would think that KSPN will be operating with its new authorized facility in the next few weeks.
