How does L.A. support 3 rock stations?

I agree. I miss the days when KROQ wouldn't touch Metallica with a ten foot pole.

When was that, 1985? KROQ was the first alternative station in the country to play Metallica.
KROQ didn't touch Metallica until the Re-Loaded album in the mid to late 90's and even today do not go any further back in the catalog than the Black Album (other than maybe playing "One"). Pure Rock 105.5 KNAC had the distinction of being the Metallica destination station back in the 80's and the early 90's.

Yes.com indicates they've been playing a lot of Metallica recently. However, that just may be because Metallica is heavily rumored to be headlining Night 2 of the Almost (but not barely at all) Acoustic Christmas this year.

There used to be even more. At one time it was:

KMET
KLOS
KLSX
KROQ
KNAC
KNX (I think it was called CD93 or something - kind of a "quality rock" thing)

Plus many people could pick up 91X and KGB out of San Diego.

...and maybe you could count KRTH too.

You also had KQLZ (Pirate Radio)

True, but by then the rock lineup had changed to:

Oldies 93 (oldies)
KLOS
KLSX
Pirate (more Top 40, actually)
KRTH (oldies)
The Edge / KMPC
KROQ

.......a little later we had Y107, KSCA, and the short-lived 100.3 (not Pirate, but rock/alt rock).....

As for KNX, I have some tapes of them playing CDs on Saturday night - things like Elton John's Greatest Hits. Their playlist I think was Tracy Chapman, 10,000 Maniacs, Little Feat. Maybe I'm mis-remembering all of this! ???

Yeah, I actually prefer Krock2 go both LA's KROQ and Indie 103

Yeah, but the thing that LA is missing the most is a true rock/active rock station. KROQ just doesn't cut it for me. There are a lot of big artists and songs out there that never get played on the radio.

When I don't have Octane on satellite radio, I can't find anything to listen to.

The IE has X 103.9, which you can't hear outside of the greater Riverside-San Bernardino area, which plays some heavier songs than KROQ and has a less MTV-like presentation (which is what i prefer). There was KCAL too, but they seem to be leaning more classic rock lately.

Before they segued from Modern AC to Modern Rock, KYSR 98.7 was rumored to be going Active Rock. Alas, that did not happen. You don't see many Active Rock stations along California's coastal cities. KIOZ, San Diego, is the only one I can think of.

I hope those L.A. stations, especially the Sound & Indie, would play some more Canadian acts that you'll rarely hear on U.S. radio such as Matthew Good, Tragically hip, 54/40, Sam Roberts, Big Sugar, etc. That would be great!

Tidbit from LAObserved.com this afternoon: Indie 103.1 has dropped Chris Morris' "Watusi Rodeo," the only roots/Americana show on L.A. commercial radio. Going for a more consistent sound, says the station, but Morris says the program director is "under extreme duress to improve Indie's numbers."

How do you improve Indie's numbers? With that signal and that niche, all you're doing is pissing off the core by taking away things that made it "their" station.
