How does WOGL continue to have great ratings, the commercial load is tremendous, the air talent talks too much and the music is the same lame tired cuts. When WCAU-FM 70-74 years, was on the air, they only pulled a 4.5 at their highest trend, and this was with better music and great air talent. Any ideas why OGL does so good.

I have no idea, they are VERY stale. There is no reason to play the same songs three to four times a day (not even exaggerating, check their playlist). They used to sound pretty good a few years ago, but recently they took out a lot of good 60s songs. I'm thankful an excellent station WABT-FM in my area signed on two years ago. They have the same format as WOGL, but do not have a tight playlist. You'll hear the Animals, Elvis, tons of Beatles and many other songs that WOGL used to play but no longer does.

Here is my theory: Office listening. OGL has become the More 101 of the 45+ set.
At my own place of employment, two women, one close to retirement age, one who I estimate is at least 55, always have OGL on in their shared office.
Last week at a doctor's office where there wasn't one person working in the office under 40 (again my guess), and WOGL was on. One woman working in the reception area was singing along to the songs.
More has alienated a certain portion of the upper end of the 25-54 women demographic. (Not that it's hurting More, see their most recent 12+ ratings yesterday.)
I would guess OGL is getting a lot of PPM credit from age 45+ women listening all day at work.
On a side note: I notice that after a couple of months of 12+ improvement, Ben-FM, now practically all 80s and 90s music, has stalled again. IMHO, I think they've identified a music niche in between More and OGL ... they just need to change their presentation.

That is the main reason WOGL and other classic hits stations like WCBS FM, KLUV and KRTH do well. If you are over 55 and want 60's and 70's music on regular over the air radio, by default stations like WOGL continue to score well. I'm surprised other top ten markets like Houston,Boston and Washington do not have a pop based classic hits station,considering how well WOGL and CBSFM do. WBEB is probably the most listened to office radio station in Philly, but you'll rarely hear 70's, yet alone 60's on that station. WOGL is the station to hear that music.

I was always told this aged crowd is not Advertiser friendly, but I guess OGL doesn't care or sees it that way, if that was so, wouldn't a Standards format on FM be the way to go to capture that audiance.

Funny...that reminds me of my friend & his wife. How do they stay married? She nags him all the time, and they eat the same stuff, and always do the same thing every year for vacation.

People listen to an oldies station for pretty much the same reason. If they really want to try something new, they'd change the station. But they like their familiar favorites, and they'll put up with whatever it takes to get it. Just as they put up with the traffic and crowds at the beach every year.

There's a world of difference between classic hits and standards. Sure, WOGL may get more of the upper end now, but with music centered around, roughly, the lower end of the Baby Boom and portions of Generation X, they're guaranteed to be getting younger listeners as well (younger being relative....all the more so compared to standards, a bit of a silly proposition.)

Actually not totally true. 100.3 also plays older music and I actually enjoy them WAY more and would find them way more enjoyable to listen to in the office.

Not totally true about 'OGL being the only game in town for older music. WRNB, in my opinion, has a much more unique, enjoyable, and even office-friendly format. More people just need to know about it. I actually really love WRNB.
