How does Tom, flitting around in Chopper 880, calculate the time of delays accessing the GWB (from five different NJ approaches [the local and express lanes of 80/95 each count as one approach]), the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels? ??? Does he have a contact at the Port Authority?

I'm surprised he doesn't do it for the QMT and BBT too, although I shouldn't be because it would take up additional valuable air time. Or else he doesn't have a contact at the TBTA. ;D

NO...it's because he's just THAT good.
Plus he has an entire network of people to calculate and help.
Ah...the magic of radio...BTW/ He also flies the chopper himself...LOL
 
Lol...no doubt he is that good. But in reality, he's in constant 2-way radio contact with the producer's desk at Shadow-Metro Traffic in Rutherford. He gives them incidents he spots as he flies along, and they fill him in on all the other stories around the area so he can give a comprehensive report every 10 minutes. That's how he can say, for instance, that he's hovering over a crash on the Cross County Parkway, and then segue to "...and the Belt is in trouble now with a flipped over SUV right in front of Kennedy Airport."

No, he does not fly the chopper himself. He will credit the pilot at the end of each shift before saying "if you're still on the roads, easy does it."
 
Hi, um...I thought the "LOL" I placed AFTER the flying the chopper line was enough to show the sarcasim...next time I'll be more specific.
 
That's what made Neal Busch (who is right up there with Dan Ingram on my list of radio idols) so amazing. He actually did fly the chopper.

If Clear Channel hears about this they will replace ALL traffic reporters with chopper pilots that can also voice trak a few other markets...;)
