How far back is appropriate to go on a CHR/Pop station?

Considering that it's not a "throwback thursday" or something, how far back do you think is appropriate to go on a CHR/Pop station? Is it appropriate to have songs from the early 2000s in regular rotation as gold? Personally I think 5 years is max but even songs from that far back should only get a couple of spins per week, unless of course its throwback thursday, wayback wednesday, or something similar. To go back 5 years, it also needs to be something that was huge, such as "Lady Gaga - Bad Romance." For regular rotation, probably the oldest I would play regularly is something like "Calvin Harris - Let's Go" or "Demi Levato - Give Your Heart a Break" and that I would give maybe 4 spins per week. I wouldn't give anything older than a year more than 10 spins per week.

Thoughts?
 
I think you have a pretty good theory on gold rotations within a week. What I find crazy is neither WZPL or WNOW(wnou formerly) played Let's Go by Calvin Harris when it was popular. I wish I could just hear that song on the radio once a week. Both of the stations mentioned play identical playlists, it is not uncommon to hear 1, 2 step by Ciara on both stations a few times a day or Kings of Leon Use Somebody. I think these are terrible "throwback" songs being a Thursday or not. So some people have their opinions, for myself I would probably go as far back as something like Don't You Worry Child or Can't Hold Us.
 
I'd say 2009 would be about right (though I'd include Lady Gaga's debut "Just Dance" in there from late 2008)
 
I hear "ride wit me" by Nelly pretty much all the time.
I believe I also hear "what's luv" by Ashanti ft. Fat Joe.

I should also include Linkin Park "encore / numb"

These I remember hearing frequently in Phoenix.

That's way too old for CHR. A roommate said she heard Yeah by Usher on KKRZ a couple weeks ago. Seriously? That's 10 years old already! I also hear Lose Yourself semi-regularly on CHR. This is why I hope Classic Hip-Hop will be a viable format, to get some of these songs out of CHR rotation.
 
There are some songs that will always have a favorable audience reaction. I hear Low by Flo Rida and Yeah by Usher on a local CHR. Both songs still fill a dance floor at a wedding reception too.

I think I actually heard that! It may be my imagination but it seems to me that KKRZ is leaning toward more of an Adult CHR. It at least appears to be most likely to air a song that's almost recurrent. As far as Usher is concerned, Z100 has always run SOME older songs. A few years ago, they were playing "Toxic" by Britney Spears and "Rock Your Body" by fellow Mouseketeer, Justin Timberlake.

Hmm, to me KKRZ is a pretty straight ahead CHR. What's odd to me is KBFF, which seems to be Adult CHR overlayed with a heavy rhythmic lean if that makes any sense. Also, does it seem to you that they're making changes left and right over there? It seems like every time I turn around they're doing something a little differently.

I'm sure people will appreciate this discussion but since KXJM switched from Wild back to Jammin', KBFF's Rhythmic content is a little too much for me and hard to listen to, for very long. I'd like to be gung-ho for them, since they're live and local but really like Z100 much better. Anyway, my point was that it seems like they're more likely to play a song, that's on the way down the charts, a recurrent and a climbing song than one that's climbing, one on the way down and a recurrent. This sounds like I'm talking about the order of songs but I'm actually talking about the likelihood of the songs being played. In other words, they seem to favor established hits. On the other hand, I may not be hearing this right. It used to be so easy, when Yes.com was still up and running. As far as both stations are concerned, I'd have to say that they're both Mainstream CHR, just with a little lean in one direction or another. Wild was much more Rhythmic than either one and that pales compared to Jammin'! What kind of changes did you have in mind? I'll ask my granddaughter.
 
I think you nailed it. It also seems to me like KBFF is adding some out-of-the-blue rhythmic tracks way earlier than they ever would have a year or so ago. Also, I've noticed they're phasing out Eric and have dropped all count down shows. They used to have the top 8 at 8, the 4:00 hitlist, and the most wanted mix at 9 as well as what appeared to be a brief mix show of old school songs at noon. That's all gone now and they appear to have gone jockless middays.

If you're hearing the same thing I am, it must not be just my imagination. That's good to know. "Live and local, jockless": That's an interesting trick! I don't expect any real changes anytime soon. Their cume is pretty good. Hey, I just noticed something: I used to be a senior member and now, I'm a junior member!
 
Funny you'd mention "Throwback Thursday." Earlier this summer my local CHR KMXV had a "throwback Thursday" where they played songs like "Shine" by Collective Soul, "Soak up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow, and even "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure, an odd choice since the station nowadays is such a straight forward CHR, buts ince they used to lean adult.
 
This is not about years, you think like that and you fail. It is all about the song, spinning some old biggie songs in middays can be a good move for some chrs, but that's it, most pop songs from 10 years later are simply unplayable now. A Santaria or Mo Money on an adult chr ala kiss 108 Boston is a good play esp in middays, but you must restrict it to only those songs that everyone still loves, and there are very very few of them. Most radio people would be best not to play this game, you will mess it up.
 
WHYI regularly plays throwbacks from the 2000s/2010-2011, probably once or twice an hour. Within the past week I've heard "Ride Wit Me" by Nelly (2001), "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy (2001), "Get Busy" by Sean Paul (2003), "Gold Digger" by Kanye West (2005), "Stronger" by Kanye West (2007), "Live Your Life" by TI (2008), "Whatcha Say" by Jason Derulo (2009), and "Down" by Jay Sean (2009).

Interestingly, I have heard a couple of Biggie tracks ("Mo Money, Mo Problems", "Hypnotize", "Juicy", and "Big Poppa") on WHYI. Those seem to comprise most of the 90s songs they play - the only song from the 90s that I've heard on WHYI that wasn't Biggie was, ironically, "I'll Be Missing You".

EDIT: To add to that throwback list, I heard "My Love" by Justin Timberlake (2006) about 30 minutes ago.
