How far West does BBC 198 go?

I know DXers on the East Coast of the US and Canada can pick up the BBC on 198, and sometimes RTE on 252 or other longwave signals from mainland Europe.

But I was wondering how far inland do they go? ???

I'm on the western side of Michigan and have been able to pull them in on several occasions using big longwire antennas. Longwave reception was excellent for me back in December and I caught many of these receptions on video and posted them on youtube. Here's reception of the BBC on 198 khz:

If you check out my other videos, you'll find more LW receptions of Poland, Ireland, Morocco, France, etc. Conditions lately haven't been favorable (for me anyway) as compared to last December.

nice videos, found them recently ..

BBC 198 comes in year round every night in Boston. daytime its carrier only tho id presume going out to a pier aand using a tuned loop or beverage shold get you 24/7 solid reception

The distance between Droitwich and Boston is a little over 3,000 miles, not to mention land between the two cities.

I'm wondering if any daytime carrier heard is from a beacon rather than the BBC stations.

In the winter here in SW Ohio, 198 occasionally surfaces with very weak but listenable audio, and only when I use my Drake R8B/Wellbrook ALA 1530+ combination. Other times, nothing or a carrier. The increasing sun activity probably won't help matters.

Thanks, guys

You may not know the answer to this, but does it have any kind of audience there, beyond DXers?

One of our work vehicles in Morocco had the LW band and I'd listen every now and then just for the novelty of being able to hear a few LW stations.

From what I've read, longwave signals travel far better over water than AM (or is that UNDER water?)

BBC Radio 4 runs shipping reports for ships in the North Atlantic (European side mostly.) So I guess that's what they use their LW signal for (on top of the documentary/radio serials Radio 4 usually runs.)
