How far will HD go?

I got a question, how far will HD-FM go? the secound channel & the main? The reason why I need to know, I am planning on getting one! I love it I am checking out the online streams they sound great. How far will the 2-3 HD channels go? I have heard diffrent stories all the time, I dont know who to believe though. I'll just really half to test it myself I gues, but one thing is for sure, I do hear the digital sidebands in my radio, does that mean I am ready to go? I hear them in the FM bands. Hopefully soon I'll be able to grab one of them radios ;D.

The HD signal generally travels as far as the analog "city-grade" contour. If you get a solid, no-static analog signal, you should be able to easily get HD/HD2. If you're farther out, you can probably get HD/HD2 with an external antenna. If you're in the country, you'll probably be out of luck.

Enjoy your new radio, but hold on to your receipt in case you're disappointed with the reception. Many people are, so don't toss that piece of paper.

I could have purchased an HD radio this summer, but the money went for a similarly-priced Canon mini-DV video camera instead. I guess I spent MY money foolishly!

I'm curious. Which HD or HD-2 FM stations have you interested, and why? I assume you've listened online for some length of time and now want to be able to listen in your car, right? Also, do they play the same songs at exactly the same time every day?

I have a outdoor antenna about 20' up in the air along with my TV antenna about 25' up..., most of the time its static free, every so often I'll get some static and if it will skip from time to time I know I probably wont get a good signal, but I like the Texas country on HD-2 on Kj-97's hd-2 channel, its listed at the Clear channel's HD web site. http://www.clearchannelmusic.com/hdradio/ I like that country more than mainstream country.

See, that's the difference between the anti-IBOC folks, and normal people. You asked a question, and I gave you a direct, factual answer.

The anti-IBOC folks have to ask a misleading question, and add some sort of opinion in there. I guess they believe that you're much too stupid to think for yourself. I don't agree.

I've always said that when you get one, be sure you can return it if necessary. But at least try it. Most bashers on here haven't.

And to answer VSA's question...no the songs don't repeat like that.

And a question to VSA: With the new JVC radio at $150...where can I get a Canon mini-DV like yours at that price?

If you use that antenna...you should have no problem. But take the one piece of good advice offered here - get one you can return, just in case.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see what I can do, hopefully I can get one soon, it may be a few months though, I'm already hooked on the streams though I cant be on the computer for to long though lol! Thanks again.

I think you find some lower prices in a few months, so it may be worth the wait!

With your antenna setup, you should be able to pick up your new favorite station if you're roughly within the RED contour on the map linked below.

I'm sure you are aware that this "The Outlaw" HD-2 station is running commercials already. I just heard a spot while listening here in Southern California. Kinda weird isn't it. We're both listening to the same San Antonio station, loud, clear and interference-free via the Internet, but we're worried about if it can be picked up via iBiquity's latest HD Radio technology several miles outside of San Antonio.

Hmmm...He'll be able to listen to an even better signal for free, while using his bandwidth to do other things. None of that nasty "buffering". He can play games, watch YouTube, all without interrupting his favorite station!

As for the commercials...there are a lot of commercial free ones, too. But you fail to mention that.

Kinda weird, isn't it. The Anti-IBOC folks will make any kind of snarky comment, true or not, to convince you to change your mind. What's funny is that it isn't working.

I'll just continue to say: Decide for yourself! You're a smart cat for asking, and an even smarter one for deciding to try it out for yourself.

An even better signal for free? What's this obsession with satellite radio? He's listening for free right now without having to buy a new radio with questionable reception capabilities.

If you're still on dialup, you're not watching YouTube either. You've got a pretty lame broadband connection if you're buffering Internet-delivered radio. If you don't have broadband available yet, then I can see the new radio as a short-term alternative - IF he can get the signal.

If CC was smart, they'd stream the HD-2 station at a higher bitrate. In the end, I predict that's exactly what they'll do.

Your have just proved one of my complaints about HD Radio - the typical listener, when they get the HD Radio home, figures out that the 7-foot Receptor HD's antenna, and any other HD Radio's antenna, will need to be placed high up, in order to get a signal that has only 60% coverage of analog's signal, back go the radios ! Good advise, vsa, hang onto that receipt ! I can't wait (if, people even go for this fraudulent technology), when they get these ugly pieces of garbage receivers home and have to go through all that trouble, just for mediocore AM/FM reception ! Heck, I just turn on my analog PLL AM/FM radio, and with its internal ferrite-bar antenna, can get stations, at night, up to 1000 miles ! What is really cool, is listening to the tornado alerts in Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, etc., and listening to Katrina reports from New Orleans, but with an HD radio's lousy coverage, that would not be possible. Worst case, I'll just DX into Canada, assuming the IBOC adjacent-channel hash from any nearby US stations does not wipe out the signals (da, I wonder why Canada has filed a formal complaint, with the FCC), to get the simulcast talk shows I want. In the near future, when iRadio becomes fully available (Motorola has already placed one iRadio-enabled device in stores), I will definately go that route, insted of lousy HD Radio - who the heck wants just the same local channels, when one could get stations from around the world (oh, for a hefty $7/month - and Clear Channel will eventually charge for the HD channels). vsa, I did read that the HD channels play blocks of the same music, over and over - what a joke !

Got news for you. People are already going for this technology. In fact, a new person right here in this thread. Looks like you lost another one.

Have a great day! I know I will. The truth will win every time...

Obsession with Satellite radio? Nope- that ain't free either. Now you're grasping at straws, trying to move the focus to "lame internet connections". Got news for you...not only is the internet NOT trouble free, several ISP's have implemented download caps as well.

Back to trouble-free no-cost terrestrial radio. Argue all you want, but at the end of the day it just works. Always has, always will.

That's funny. How can you have a complaint about something you've never used before.

To use the words you like to use: What a joke. How fraudulent.

SayNoToIBOC on flying a 747:

"Don't fly a 747"
"Why not?"
"I don't like flying a 747"
"You don't know how to fly"
"I don't care. I don't like it, and neither should you. In fact, you'll die if you fly one"
"Uh, no you won't"
"Yes you will. I heard of a guy who told someone else that they knew someone who did"
"That's not true"
"It is too, you [edit]"

I am really wondering how well that antenna will pull it in, I'm hoping it will work out, I love the idea of better sound & more choices, I can already get over 48 radiostations analog! I gues my only outage may be is if a intense skip would come and if that happens I can just get Houston's HD channels :). I believe I am sold to HD radio now :).

Well, it sounds like you should have no problem at all. I'll repeat, though: Make sure you can return it if there is a problem.

I have a friend that lives 30 miles away from the metro market, and with the supplied wire antenna can get all of the HD signals on his receptor. It appears though that some versions have a more difficult time than others. I'm certain that with your antenna, and the reception you describe, you'll have no problem at all. Give it a try...I know I fell in love with it after I did (and I wasn't a fan of IBOC at first).

Jras20,
I had the pleasure of listening to the BA radio at a store in Cincinnati They had it connected to an outdoor antenna. I tried the radio with both the supplied antenna, and the rooftop. With the outdoor antenna, the Cincinnati and Dayton FMs were receivable in HD as well as the HD-2s. When using the supplied antenna, only the Cincinnati FMs were receivable in HD. It should be noted that Dayton is 40-50 miles north of Cincinnati, and the Dayton FMs were not receivable with the supplied antenna in analog either. As another poster said, the HD signal should be available within the city grade counter. The transition from analog to digital was smooth. However, the difference was dramatic on AM. WLW's analog signal was noisy due to the electronic equipment near the receiver. When WLW switched to HD, the sound quality was amazing. For the people who say that AM HD is a waste, I will appreciate the melodious voices the voices of Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity and others (not air america) in HD! The difference between FM analog and digital was also impressive but not as striking as with AM. On FM, when HD kicked in, it sounded as if a blanket was removed from between the receiver and listener. I will purchase a radio after I hear reports about the Radiosophy. I hope the Radiosophy is better than the BA.

Only once though (upon tuning the station).

The more you know...
