I thought that the freakshow was being serious! I heard them last night, the show is still on! It was an April Fools JOke..Sorry about that!

It's all good.

-CC in Raliegh got me back in '04 when (then) Oldies 100.7 and G105 kept saying they were "Going to be taking over another station"; but they kept talking about it for about 2 weeks leading up to it.

-It sucked when I found out that they meant a gas station.
:(

I remember that! A lot of people were thinking they were going to be flipping frequencies, and many of us on this very board were debating the pros and cons of such a frequency swap. They got quite a few of us with that one :D

one of my favorite April Fools gags was done by WKIX back in the 80s. A two week promotion called the "Magica Mystery Tour" - guess a secret destination and win a trip there.

"We'll award the grand prize on Friday, April First!".

The morning show was live from the location - giving clues to the destination all morning and taking calls - and talked about the Olympic swimming pool, the fine restaurants, a championship golf course outside your door ..

People guessed every vacation site in Mexico and the Caribbean. The final clue did it - "Pedro says". Couple from Hillsborough won an all expense paid trip to South of the Border!

Was this the time when WTRG kept talking about "signing off" and it turned out to be a ruse promoting some sweepstakes?

Radio One bought into it too, huh? Ha! That doesn't surprise me... it was pretty convincing. I wish we still had those threads here... everyone was throwing all kinds of ideas in the air as to what it would mean for the market :)

yes. G105 kept talking about "taking over another station" and Oldies 100.7 went on and on with "signing off" - all they signed off on was some money giveaway sweepstakes. - i find it kinda ironic since, later that year they did, in fact..sign off and flip to another format. but I did think it was cool when they simulcasted G105 for a day or so. . . I think they even had a legal ID (which sounded great actually) that went along somethiing like: "This..is the 200,000 watt powerhouse of Hit Husic..G 105! WDCG-Durham/Raleigh..WTRG-Rocky Mount...This, is the world famous G 105."

yea something like that. haha

anyone remember 100.7 the Bull ? haha. that's exactly what it was!

yep, back when I was trying to get back into radio, speaking with the PD at one of the radio one stations, not getting anywhere and going over to the CC cluster and meeting with the PD at then WRDU...his name escapes me right now....

Pretty cool that you guys are discussing this. I was programming G during that stunt....which was not on April Fools. I can't remember if April Fools that year on Bob & the Showgram was the opening of Horsey's
(restaurant serving horse meat) or something else. The timing of that "station" stunt was great for G...we had a gas promotion planned & Oldies was launching their book promotion.....lots of talk in the market.

I hated to see TRG flip but I have to admit, 200,000 watts of hit music kinda sounded cool. I was proud of
the River when we first launched it (I spent many late nights doing logs for that thing)....a very cool gold based alt station. I haven't heard the station since I left in 2005 but I'm a big fan of Brian Taylor so I hope they do well.

Hey Rick, welcome to the boards!

I have to say that's definitely one of the best stunts I've ever heard. I think the only that the beats it in my mind is when KFYE out in California flipped from Christian AC to all sex sounds (or something to that effect) before going Urban Contemporary. Pretty shocking to anyone who didn't know it was coming, I'm sure!

Rick - the River now sucks.

it's now a....dang, I can't even describe it....but it's NOT the way it was when it started out.

CC, bring back the 'old' River!

WTRG was "Signing off"....on $50,000. It was the OM's idea. :'(

Who would've thought that 5 months later it would really sign off. Why? B/c the OM was a moron.

Jimmy Tidwell was the PD of WRDU from July '03-August/Sept '05.

Hey Rick!
How's the music biz?

River is now a poor excuse for an RDU replacment...the classic hits station JR always wanted...and it still doesn't work. WRSN is now "Kiss 93-9", CHR/R. If RDU was left alone as a balls out classic rock it would've been fine. MC and JR thought otherwise...and they killed a 23 year heritage rock. Now RDU is country with JB&B.. which has failed on 3 other stations in the market; RDU, WTRG and 96rock. Actually...JB&B were #1 M25-54 on WTRG. But the women left...which killed WTRG. Not the "dying of a format". I digress....River, if it was still what you put on, would be more successful than the classic sh*ts format it is now.
