How hard would it be to...

Is it possible for an existing AM swap out its license from an AM to an FM ? There are plenty of open frequencies in our area. Anyone got any ideas here? I know I can get an FM Translator for my AM stick. Hell we have more height than anyone in the area and i would imagine that a 3 to 10 KW FM signal where our stick is would be a flamethrower. The top of our stick is sitting at almost 800 feet and the average terrain around here is about 200 feet or less and slides downhill all the way to Tallahassee...

The only way to get an FM in Thomasville or Tallahassee would be to buy an existing area FM station. You can't swap out an AM for an FM. There are no open frequencies in that area. If you could fit something in, it would have to go through the FCC auction process. That takes years, and if you were the winning bidder, it would be expensive.

There are several open frequencies here we have found. I just thought it would be easier to shelve the AM and beef up the FM instead of running the 250 watt translator along with the AM signal. We have acquired the FM Translator to move onto our stick if all else fails...

Trust me I've been doing this for 33 years, and I'm very familiar with the SW Ga./NW Fla radio landscape.I stand my first reply. If you have a translator by all means simulcast the AM.

250 watts on FM from our height should be pretty potent...

Checking the FCC database for Ochlocknee/Thomasville there are no apps/cps/licenses for a "translator" 250 watts at 1000 feet. One or two licensed, 13 or so watts at 300 feet - some apps for similar facilities.
What are the call letters of your FM facility? Where is your tower located? 250 watts at 1000 feet would be a pretty big signal and an unusual authorization for a translator.

It has not been secured yet, but it is available. I must have mistyped what I meant. We did the study and found it feasable. There are several translators for sale in the vicinity...We don't have calls for an FM Facility...Our consulting engineer has determined that we can put our new FM translator on our existing AM tower with some RF protection so there will be no bleed over. We have not filed on this one yet, but the translators we are looking to acquire can be moved to our location due to our height etc and even with our height and a 250 watt signal we do not step on anyones signal on the frequency we are targetting.
