How is 96ROCK doing in Dayton?

The downside of the subsriber-only policy with Arbitron, is you don't see how certain stations do in other cities. For example, K99.1 Dayton was always in Cincinnati's monthly ratings, usually between a 1.5 and 2.0 share. And I know 96ROCK is usually 13th or 14th in Cincinnati's ratings, but it'd be nice to see how they're doing in Dayton. I hear and read from a lot of Dayton listeners saying they ditched 103.9 the X in favor of 96ROCK.

Bill you don't see the Dayton stations on the Cincinnati ratings anymore because they aren't encoding for PPM. It has less to do with who subscribes.

They were ecoding for Cincinnati PPM from 2010 until the subscription policy started. Probably still are listed but only the other subscribing stations have access to those numbers. Same in Dayton, only they're still doing the diaries. The Cincinnati stations that pop up occasionally in the Dayton books (WGRR, Q102) are probably still visible to the people running the Dayton stations that subscribe to Arbitron.

Maybe Jason or Greg could tell us if Dayton is encoding. Cincinnati stations will show in Dayton because they don't have to encode to get credit, although I noticed there was no WLW listed last time.

Yep WLW hasn't been listed in Dayton ratings since the subscribe policy started. Even though it's a Clear Channel station. I guess they are only concerned about the actual Dayton stations. Sounds smart on one hand, not paying to see one station's rating that can be heard in multiple cities. Same reason WLW no longer shows up in Columbus' ratings (which is fine since they do less than a 1 share in Columbus. In Dayton they normally do anywhere from a 3 to a 5 share).

I had no idea WLW did that poorly here. It's not rare to hear listener call-ins or emails from Columbus. That's a pretty good signal here, but not as strong as in Dayton of course.

In the Dayton TSA they have a 0.3 Share 12+. They have a 0 Share in the Metro.

These numbers were for 96 Rock.

How strong is 96.5's signal in the Dayton metro? I can remember when the station ID every hour was Hamilton,Dayton,Cincinnati.

I'm very surprised 96Rock's numbers in the Dayton metro are as poor as they are. I would expect WEBN's numbers to be that low (because of severe interference from Hot 102.9), but not 96Rock.

I cannot comment on reception indoors, but in the car 96Rock has a very good signal in Dayton proper. It's comparable to K99.1's strength near Cincinnati. 96.5's signal doesn't start to flutter along I-75 until I reach the Troy area, and even up there it is quite listenable. Station usually becomes unlistenable for me between Piqua and Sidney along I-75.

On a somewhat related note, WEBN appears to be kicking the snot out of 96Rock in the ratings these days in the Tri-State. Would be nice if 103.9 would simply replicate 102.7's playlist.

I don't lose 96ROCK's signal on I-71 North until between exits 69 and 75.

In terms of WEBN kicking the snot out of 96ROCK, yes WEBN's ratings are up, but 96ROCK hasn't really lost any listeners, and their ratings are pretty consistent month-to-month, even with WEBN's increase and even with The Project now getting ratings.

And Bill the same could be said when 96 Rock was "beating" EBN.
96's numbers didn't go up...EBN's went down, but it was portrayed as a major accomplishment for 96 which didn't actually do anything. EBN was still beating their cume by 100,000.

It all comes down to billing. WEBN now has a high profile morning show which probably cost more than what 96Rock has in the mornings.

With WTUE, Eagle in Xenia, WXEG, etc. all in the rock market in one form or another, why would a Dayton listener get excited about hearing (essentially) the same songs on a Cincinnati station?

Because none of the local Dayton stations play heavy doses of contemporary hard rock that had been WXEG's calling card for years.

96Rock does have a decent amount of music overlap with the present-day WXEG, but they also play a fair share of harder rock that WXEG will no longer touch.

And that "contemporary rock" you're talking about is not attracting listeners anywhere from the numbers I've been seeing and hearing about.

It is attracting listeners but not to radio. Pandora,Itunes,Youtube & Satellite have grabbed most of those listeners away from radio.

Maybe. But, I have a 24 year old relative who listens to 80's classic rock because he says he's bored with hearing music with no melody or harmony, just power chords and screaming vocalists.

I'm not, obviously, in the demo, so I really can't say. But, being somewhat of a musician, I can appreciate where he comes from.

If WLVQ 96.3 Columbus has HD Radio, it's on 96.1 and 96.5 which effectively reduces 95 Rock's coverage. Dirty little secret about HD radio.

I'm with you Jason. I've never liked screamers like Godsmack, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, etc. why someone wants to listen to growling & screaming is beyond me. That's not music.
