Well... there are many more factors that go into this than I've been explaining. I wont get deep into it all. I think the bottom line, though, is to remember this station's current format is new. Very new. Also, somewhat keep in mind the type of history Atl has had for CHR rhythmic AND top 40 formatting (although I'd say it was rather successful the past 10 years for certain reasons..).
They have to stick to basics for now, and maybe will eventually have more mixes that... sound like their Friday night club mixes - with exclusive stuff thrown in here and there. I'm just thankful to know,
before moving there, that there are ALREADY mixes happening. Many stations that flip to a new format or start a new format don't (keep, or) start featuring their mixes or dj's right away. The fact that they are already mixing tells me I (and people who are interested in this type of stuff - as well of the music) do not have to wait or wonder if there will ever be any mixes, but can rather fast forward to assuming that if this much is already happening, chances are down the road that mixes will become more fascinating and "exclusive". (After all, BOTH Q and WBTS started out heavy on dance / exclusive style mixshows (and Q has KEPT their Saturday night mixshow since around 2002 to deliver pretty much the same theme of music) so we all know that playing dance in a mix a few times a week or doing anything exclusive SOME times will not cause the radio apocalypse to occur....)
Also keep in mind that I trust the new MD of The Groove - based on his past experience on similar format typed stations here in the west coast... so I trust that he (out of all MD's on other Atl stations that I have no knowledge about) knows what he's doing, although he is pretty much in an odd market. I'm not sure how much he knows about "the south" or how he'll navigate in the long run in this type of market, but he knows how to make things interesting and fun IN ADDITION TO sticking to the business details. After all, he could've easily just said
"No mixes. No liveness, No fun. Besides, mixes are not necessary. I'm just sticking to the basics and what's necessary for ME to survive in the industry. All business. Nothing more is needed." and removed all mixes. If I were him, I'd also be sticking to the basics and "playing it safe"
while still trying to
be the best I can be for my listeners and deliver as much of a party atmosphere as I can.
So, with that surface level stuff being said, I have a high level of faith that things will "get better", on Groove, or to where we rhythmic / rhythm top 40 freaks desire. I seriously doubt that Atlanta is the only (major) place where everything many people have been trying to say (and mainly the type of things I've discussed) cannot work, and that Q100, 95.5 The Beat, and other things that are beginning to unfold were just an accidental fluke occurrence in the universe created by people who should earn the guinness book of world records for doing stupid things in radio.
I know a lot of people have complained here a lot. I cannot speak for everyone else, but I will need convincing and direct proof that the things I've suggested -
that are not only the norm for the type of formats I've discussed, but have also (once again) begun to unfold here IN Atl as well, could never happen or work.
Anyway... 5 o clock... Friday... a lot of mixes about to kick off here in.. where I am, and
I Like That! (Some of you get it!

Good day folks.
