How is "Movin" doing?

How is "Movin" doing? I'm in Western NY so I haven't been able to hear them yet. Too early to tell? I saw on another forum that they hired Skip Clark awhile back.

Not to be over critical, but the music mix is way of the mark. Nick Caplan the so-called PD with an ego as big as the world sounds just like he did at Oldiez 96 in Utica and sounds way out of place. But in Nick's case, he is so in love with his voice, that he would never realize that. Plus Nick is one of the world's richest men, as least that what he pounds down everyone's throat, that it doesn't matter to him if he succeeds or not at Movin.

Skip Clark sounded pretty good i thought on Y-94, but has no business on Movin. He is forcing himself to blend in with the music and style of the station. He does not sound good or natural.

Too many stations in the market to listen too without having another station try it's luck.

I don't believe any of that. If there is room in radio for AC, Hot AC, Lite AC and Modern AC then why not rhythmic AC?

I love the station's jingles and liners. If there is a problem with the station (apart from the fact you can't hear it well outside of Syracuse) is that their music library is to small; there is too much repetition.

I'm usually not up early enough to hear any morning shows, but the once or twice I had a chance to catch Nick, I did pick up on the fact that he's still adjusting from the oldies format. That was pretty early on though, so I don't know how much it's changed.

I usually hear it in the afternoons and late at night. I was surprised to hear the overnight guy give a time check one night. Had me wondering if he was there live, or if he just did a really good job guessing what time that particular voicetrack was going to air. But seeing as how they only have 2 stations and the other one is Radio Disney, a live overnight jock there wouldn't surprise me as much as if this were a ClearChannel property.

As for the music, sometimes the mix is great, other times it's a bit off. It sounds weird hearing a hot current, followed shortly thereafter by a 70's disco title. Considering the promo liners brag about how it's always upbeat and makes you feel good, I'm surprised that they still toss in the occasional slower tune.

Media_Man, I agree with you 50/50. The jingles and liners are great, and sometimes it seems like the library is too small. Seems like they're "platooning" ... some songs are in for the long haul, while a others are almost overplayed for awhile, then they disappear, only to be replaced by other songs.

The thing I don't agree with is the signal not being heard well outside of Syracuse. I can pick up 100.3 almost all the way to Utica, and I heard it for quite a ways west during a road trip that way last month. I don't know how far north or south it goes though... so I can't vouch for people commuting on 81 from the other side of the hills south of Syracuse. I also haven't really tried the 96.5 signal either. Haven't needed to since 100.3 comes in fine in the places where I'm usually listening.

Signal

To the west and south (in particular Auburn where I reside) 100.3 and 96.5 degrade considerably. 100.3 is very difficult to pick up west of Syracuse because 100.5 the Drive in Rochester, which interferes with the signal. Movin's 96.5 signal and the 96.7 are all but useless west of Syracuse because of another Rochester radio station that broadcasts on the same frequency!!! WCMF broadcasts on the 96.5 and kicks in just west of Syracuse and effectively knocks out Movin's 96.5 frequency and effectively interferes with their Oswego frequency as well.

The 100.3 tower is at the northeast corner of Oneida Lake, just north of Sylvan Beach and they are a Class A (6Kw) so their signal west of Syracuse won't be great. 96.5 is 250 watt translator, signal range maybe 10-12 mi over good terrain.

There is one little thing about Movin' that nags me, and I finally have it on my mind at the same time I'm sitting at the computer.

Whenever I think I hear the intro to "U Can't Touch This" or "Men in Black" I hate it when it turns out they're really playing the original songs these hits were sampled from. If I wanted crappy 70s disco, I'd listen to Y94 on a Saturday night.

I have pretty much given up on local radio all together (preferring to listen to XM instead). However, I liked Movin' and listened to it constantly for a while. The biggest problem I have with it is that the same damn songs are played over and over and over again! Once in a while they will throw in something really good that I haven't heard in a while, but it's mostly the same predictable songs being over played. I really want to see Movin' succeed, but I think they keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Oh yeah and the weekend mixshows were cool at first, but now it's just the same mixes being aired every single weekend. No thank you! Sorry, but I'm Movin' on.

I love the mix shows. Each week they are different and new. Who is the mixer? Is he from syracuse? The one on Friday is the best!
