How is the nighttime signal on 1230?

We spent the weekend at Fort Rapids on the southeast side and I noticed 1230 in Columbus is LOUD and has a good signal even at night where we were. How is it in the rest of the market day and night? I've always considered 1230 to be one of those "graveyard" frequencies, and based on our 1230 in Cincinnati, it is. I couldn't believe how well WTPG came in on I-71 at the Clinton County line in the evening. Our 1230 is on a short stick with horrible processing and rumor is they're only running 800 watts. I didn't get a good listenable signal until I was at the Hamilton County line, and then it was muddy!

WTPG is 1000 watts non-directional day and night, and their local coverage is approximently Delaware to circleville and Granville to London. The best website to check coverage is www.radio-locator.com.

The 1230 in Columbus is one of the better "graveyard" stations around, although its signal is degraded from its WCOL Top-40 days. In the 70s, you could hear 1230 with a solid signal 35 miles in any direction from the tower even at night. Back then, everyone dropped to 250 watts at night so the background skip was less obtrusive. Now, here in Gahanna/New Albany area, it's choppy at night less than 10 miles from the tower. Cincinnati's 1230 was always a weak signal. In the 1-2-3 W-B days, their tower was on the roof of the building the studios were in just off I-71 near the Reading/Gilbert exit. No ground system to speak of. I had a hard time hearing it on Price Hill back in the mid 70s.

Cya at the ballpark!

Thanks for the info. I was working at WDJO when the stick was on the Daylight Building. We jokingly referred to it as "Downtown's Best Oldies Station!"

I hope to be at the ballpark into October!
