How is WEEI-FM doing?

Are they talking about hockey or fights and concussions? Exactly what is actual hockey talk...........how fast somebody skates? There's really not a whole lot to the game. I've heard it described as soccer on skates. It seems to me that when you take out the staged fights, the injuries, the supensions, etc. there is very little left to talk about. 'EEI barely mentioned it for 15 years and did pretty well. If people wanted to talk about it, they would have. At one time the mid-day show was hosted by two Bruin announcers, Dale and Neumie. The only hockey caller I ever heard was Fred from NH, a known nut-case.

I think what I dislike most about hockey is that they insult my intelligence with these conjured-up fights. Fisk and Munson collide at home plate and come up swinging is a real fight. One goon skates up to another goon and says "Eh, you wanna go" is a crock.

The market 70--74 was completely dominated by "hockey talk." Nothing else (winters). Was even big during the summer. Robbie Ftorek(Needam HS) was more talked about than any Celtic.
 
WBZ-FM latched on to the Bruins at the right time, just before they won their first Stanley Cup in
40 years. As the B's made their cup run, there suddenly was a resurgence in hockey interest, or
many discovering it for the first time--as with the Sox, Pats, etc., when they were on the road
to championships. Suddenly people are out there buying T-shirts with players names, etc. Call
them pink hats or whatever. (I remember a "fanzine" from Toronto, dedicated to making FUN of
the Blue Jays and their fans, and they wondered if fans in the ninth inning said, "Shouldn't
they pull the goalie now?")

I guess there are trade discussions, critique of players, etc., just as there is for hockey coverage in newspapers. (Years ago didn't Eddie Andleman joke that the Bruins would do better if they
just "skated to the left for a change"). I'm not a soccer fan but would feel the same way about it
as you may (and admittedly I would only follow the B's in the playoffs, and even then just the very end of the game). Maybe soccer is the most popular sport in the world (second most popular,
from what I've been told: basketball), but for me it's just people running up the field, then down the field. Down the field, then up the field. Then maybe if you're very, very lucky somebody may actually score a goooooooooooooooooooal. Goooooooooooooooooal.

But who knows. (There are some other sports I might not "get" but maybe if I knew the rules...
they had some cricket on one of the sports channels and it was interesting to see the "batters",
strikers, whatever, and hitting what looked like home runs. I suppose if I knew the rules and if
cricket matches were more visible around here, I could get into it. Is it true "matches" last
several days? :)

Orr, Espo, Cheevers, etc. I remember being thrilled to get "The Brothers Esposito" as a present.
The B's won Cups when I was 8 and 10 (70 and 72) and I have a pic of myself at age 11 or
so, in a "Boston Braves" (short lived minor league team) jersey, holding a hockey stick, etc.
The B's got more followers with games on TV 38.
 
What sports talk was on in '70-'74? I know the Sports Huddle was on BZ, but Eddie Andelman was a hockey hater. Was Guy Mainella on then, with "Calling all Sports"? I was in my early 20s then and didn't listen to talk radio.

Another reason the Bruins became popular (besides winning and Bobby Orr) was that right about that time TV 38 picked them up and broadcast the games. So if you went into a bar, the Bruins were on. I don't think the Celtics had a deal with a local station. One thing I have noticed is that this area is a bandwagon jumpers paradise. It's probably the same everywhere. I've lived in the midwest and the south, but just never saw it to this extent. The Red Sox are a source of interest no matter what, but since the 2004 invasion of the pink hats, they went to a whole different level. I remember many Patriot games being blacked out on local TV; look at them now. The Celtics didn't generate a lot of interest until they won again a couple years ago, but over the years they were at least mentioned during the season. The Bruins were barely mentioned on "EEI before last season. I'm not surprised that Felger has made it a big topic. He tried to do that on "EEI but was usually quickly shot down. He knows so little about baseball and basketball that it's amazing he has a highly rated show. He knows about hockey (I guess, because I don't know anything about it) so that's what he talks about. He hit it just right.

93.7 is not good in Needham/Dedham/Wellesley. OK in car, but I can't get it on the kitchen radio.
 
Needham, Wellesley and Dedham = same overload from FM stations at the antenna farm that plagues the Backbay from stations located on the Pru, this info
has been discussed ad nauseum over and over....get it now?

What does your kitchen radio have for an antenna--is it a clock radio with a thin wire for FM,
or a "mini boom box" or some kind of portable with extending FM antenna? (like this:

It is just one of those Sony under counter jobs with the wire. Not anything great, but probably what a lot of your average folks are listening on.

I already get it. But that's not the problem on the kitchen radio. The radio's rejection is pretty good since it gets WAAF and some of the Providence stations. Also, I have a little Tecsun DSP portable (very cool radio, by the way) and the WEEI-FM signal strength is in the upper 20s where the Pru stations are in the 30s and the antenna farm stations are in the upper 40s and low 50s range.

They can. But there are shorter forms of the game that merely last all day (the one-day format, in which each team bats for 50 "overs" -- each over consists of six deliveries by the bowler (pitcher), so just imagine a baseball game with 600 pitches in it and how long that would take.) and that last about as long as a Red Sox-Yankees game (20 overs, 120 deliveries to each team). It's an interesting sport and there are plenty of places to find it if you know where to look on the web.
