How Long Before 106.5 The Buzz Expands Their Playlist Beyond The 90's?

Right now, KBZC-106.5 is Totally 90's, but I wonder how long that will last? I remember when KBGG-98.1 (Ex-KABL) San Francisco started 1994 with a 70's Music Format but within a year expanded their playlist to include the Late 60's & Early 80's. And there was KHOP-95.1 Modesto which had a 80's Music Format and within a year included the 90's. I predict that 106.5 The Buzz will play THE BEST OF THE 90's AND TODAY!

The Zone's moniker is "Today's Best Variety" and I really don't hear them playing that many 90's cuts.

The Buzz is playing some songs that Zone and MY aren't... that can't hurt

Last week I commented within the SF boards that some listeners really like when these stations play some of a well-known artist's lesser-known cuts.  This causes people to notice and stick to a station.  (They recently had this type of approach at 95.7FM, and some of us really miss it.  Maybe the new 103.7FM The Band will resurrect that.)

In the case of Pink Floyd for instance, play something else besides / in addition to the typical "Dark Side of the Moon" entries.  Go for the "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" or something from Pink Floyd Animals, from Dogs to Pigs.

In the case of Steely Dan, what about a track from "Pretzel Logic" aptly entitled
"Through with Buzz"?

You at Buzz could use that to then say we ain't through yet!
Whatever gets you through the night.

Pleasing "some" listeners at the expense of "most" listeners is not a very smart programming philosophy. Radio is a mass-appeal medium... playing an album track from Steely Dan is a sure-fire way to get 99.9% of your audience to push a button. Look at satellite radio... one of their selling points is their ability to offer niche formats full of "deep tracks"... yet those channels are their least listened to offerings... even when presented with the option of listening to channels with variety the listeners keep coming back to the hits.

And deep tracks are the last thing the Buzz wants to play... they're playing Top 40 from the 90's... Top 40 means NO deep tracks. And even if they eventually decide to add some sort of "forgotten classics" category/feature, they'll all still be songs that charted pretty high. You don't tune into a station like the Buzz to hear unfamiliar music... that's like asking an Oldies station to play an obscure album track from the Beatles instead of "She Loves You".
