How long does 92.3 Now Have?

Two things to point out:

1) Nick Cannon, 92.3's star power just resigned.

2) WXRK just received a 2.7 in the Holiday Book

So----- do you think CBS wants the current 92.3 to stay put or possibly change formats. And, what format do you think it could turn into. Right now, I think WCBS needs the most help of all the CBS AMs. They only get a 2.8, OUCH! Or, could 1010 WINS or 680 simulcast.

And please, don't tell me a dance format. Okay?

I still think they sit and wait to see what happens with ESPN. FM News is no threat, and WFAN is still the brand name in NY Radio Sports. They don't need a pre-emptive strike on FM. That, plus I'm told NOW is making real money for the first time since Howard Stern left, so why kill that? Yeah, they can probably make more FAN money if they put it on FM, but then you have a very expensive white elephant on High Island.

"A 680 simulcast"? At what point are WFAN and WCBS merging? :D

Don't forget the resignation of PD Dom Theodore. Obviously, his parting wasn't under doctor's orders...

92.3 said they'll be giving the format a chance.

Nobody pays any attention to the Holiday book for ongoing programming decisions. Buyers ignore it. In 18-49, it looks like January should finish at at a very nice 3.8 to 3.9 level, based on the first three weeks. Not top 5, but not something to jump to conclusions about.

Of course, WCBS is the highest billing station in the market. It makes up... just as WINS does... for lower 25-54 shares by having a lot more inventory.

Who is 680? You mean simulcast a Boston station in NY?

I was thinking "The Fan", and immediately thought of WCNN down here in Atlanta. Sorry!

Bring 92.3 back to K-Rock but strictly as Alternative Rock and nothing else at all.

Agreed, something like Radio 104.5 in Philly or Radio 92.9 in Boston. Both are doing well; the key is to be able to grab both the male and female demos. Unfortunately, CBS has pretty much abandoned the format. They only have three alternative stations left, all on the West Coast.

Yea, that could be said if there was no rock alternative on the HD side. Regards of HD, it's still there if you really want it. But one thing I must say if NowFM and I mean IF Now goes down, I would rather have K-Rock and it's current alternative format be on 92.3 HD-1 than wasting the frequency on an AM station simulcast.

Irrespective of David's post, 92.3 Now, unlike its sister station in LA, just hasn't gained traction in the ratings. Though I don't expect CBS Radio to ditch the format just yet, I don't regard it as much of a success, either.

You do realize that the chances of that happening are virtually nil? Though I'm a devoted listener of Alt-Rock formatted stations, I think the future of the format exists more on the Net than on terrestrial radio.

Okay...here we go.

CBS Radio has invested a lot of time, with research, and money to create a 92.3 Now. After Howard Stern left the station, the formats that came after (Free FM and the rebirth of 92.3 K-Rock) hadn't achieved the ratings CBS Radio was looking for. So they created a station to get those 18-34 demos and go after Z-100, which has been in the CHR game for most of the 28 years it has been on the air.

It MAY seem coincidental with how things have happened with Nick Cannon quitting and Dom Theodore, PD, leaving. And on another board I was very skeptical. It's just the timing of it but 92.3 Now is NOT changing format anytime in the near future. A LOT of you are virtually begging for WFAN to be on 92.3. If CBS felt sports on FM would have worked, WFAN would have been the format already. They could have done it on 102.7 when they had that chance. It just seems like right now talk based programming on FM is NOT working (News 101.9...nuff said). And as much as it seems as if music formats on FM are "fading" since most people went to digital media players and the Internet, there still is something to be said about the influence of music on the FM dial that still matters.

Once again, 92.3 Now is NOT going anywhere anytime soon. And wpb1999, there must be a reason why you wanted no one to say "dance format" because quite honestly THAT would be the one format that would make sense to get on the air somewhere. Taking my own personal bias out of it, Dance/EDM is what is riding hot right now in the mainstream culture in the country. That can't be ignored.

The minute that ESPN gets an FM signal or WEMP starts getting ratings 92.3 will be flipped to protect one of the AM franchises. In the meantime I'd expect them to stick with CHR on that frequency.

ESPN had a chance to go FM with 96.3 or 96.7 and they didn't. They have a chance with 94.7 or 107.5 now. I doubt they do 94.7 but 107.5 is a possibility.

They had little or no chance on 96.3. The family controlled NYT wanted the classical format to continue, which required another FM, albeit with a lesser signal, to be obtained for that to happen. Only one company was in a position to make that happen, and it wasn't Disney.

Has anyone noticed that the NOW DJs don't really interact with the audience anymore since Dom left? I was listening to Chunky this week and he wasn't really taking calls, and I notice they removed his show segments (such as "Chunky Complains" and the "Unnecessary Censored song"). And the Midnight Mix is gone too. ???

Probably the new PD is trying to send the station to a new direction? :-\

CBS has a great deal invested in those three NY AM franchises, WFAN, WCBS and WINS. They will not stand back if ESPN gets an FM signal. In a NY minute, it will be WFAN on 660 AM and 92.3 FM.

They don't have to worry about WEMP. AM demos aside, WINS wouldn't be a good candidate for a full market FM because it concentrates on NYC. In WINS' case, a full market FM might hurt. WCBS has always done better in the suburbs because it reaches more area than WINS. :)

Tony, with all due respect, sports talk on FM is doing very well. Look at WIP in Philly. CBS loves sports and will do whatever it needs to so they can stay king.

Do I think Now is flipping? No

It is simple..... dance music is limited. There is really no such thing as a dance format. Because you have to include Pop, top 40, CHR, hip hop, and rap in the "format". So, what is a stand-alone dance format, Tony?

If this station flips, guarantee you that it will be an FM for WFAN or one of the news stations..perhaps WCBS 880..which would get Yankees games on the FM dial.
