How long in general does it take to update a discussion forum?

I'm no computer whiz or programmer but I'm sure a few of the regular folks here may know a little about it. Since Monday afternoon (March 9th), The Sound's discussion forum board has been down in order to update it. They are planning to have threads (like on this board) about topics. I presume (hope) they mean topics/threads people can initiate. They are also going to have a link to posts that are archived. Earlier this year, The Sound's entire website was down for 3-4 weeks. But that was a total revamp. This is just the discussion board. How long should something like this take? The radio info-board was down for a few days for the revision here, and R&R's website was revised recently as well and that seemed to happen overnight. Opinions? Thanks.

Based on personal experience, it shouldn't take this long...as soon as they have their topics decided upon, it's pretty easy to make the switch - and probably could have been done fairly seamlessly (ditch the old forum one night, have the new one up the next morning, or even sooner!) Ideally, you plan out all that stuff (setup, programming, etc.) ahead of time so the changeover can happen easily with little or no down time. I noticed there are some placeholder topics there ("10 at 10", etc.), and it appears you can add a message, but I haven't tried it myself.

I'm guessing they haven't decided on all the topics yet, or - more likely IMHO - they are taking a breather from all the negative posts, and it suddenly became a good time to switch over to the "new" forum, including a requisite period of "updating" time. ;D

Just think it's no small coincidence the forum went on hiatus after a member of management there told everyone to "Go have a nice weekend" when he got tired of all the critical posts.

Hahahaha yes the thought that this was a 'strange' coincidence crossed my mind as well. Actually, after Sammy posted that a week ago today, and after some follow up posts were made on Monday by myself and others, Sammy came back on and critiqued the responses as great posts or something like that. A little later the board was down. They had made zero mention of the updating prior to the board being down.

Yes, JP, I also noticed that I could have been the first to post anything under either topic available. They wanted to direct the conversation on the 10at10 - when you click on the link, the following statement appears- "Discuss your favorite 10at10 playlists." I was tempted, but unfortunately my "favorite" 10@10 playlist was on WXPK 107.1 The Peak just a week ago. ;)

Well, what's wrong with that?? :D It would make a pretty bold statement, that's for sure!

I'm guessing they'll have a narrow list of topics to discuss and might not even have a "General Discussion" area - that way they can boot posts that are "off-topic" and steer the conversation in a positive direction. I could be wrong, but it might be a whole different forum world over there once it's up and running.

Wish I didn't feel so jaded about their motives, but Sammy's true colors came out last week with his comments - he prefers positive, "glass is half full"-type posts, no matter what he said later. That's all fine and dandy, but like someone mentioned previously...if you only want positive posts, why have a public forum??

Later, JP
