How long...

Has MOViN 997 been on the air? Should they have dropped the 'New' part by now? Or by dropping the 'point' are they still considered 'new'?
Juss wonderin'

KIFR asks:
"Should they have dropped the 'New' part by now?"

That's a good question, one that has been oft-asked over the years in situations like this,
but never answered...

When KOIT went from "Always Beautiful" Muzak to Lite Rock in the mid-1980s, I recall it
was "The New KOIT" for over three years...

When we became "Magic 101" at KHYL 101.1 MC in Sacramento, it was "The New Magic
101" for nearly two years (ending June 2, 2001). Only a month before the format changed
to its present "V-101.1," the word "new" was dropped from the Magic moniker...

I wonder what a consultant's answer is to "when do you stop calling something 'new'?"

You guessed it, MOViN is new all over again now that they're pointless.

Maybe radio stations are like a whole host of consumer products (think Tide etc.) which have "NEW! IMPROVED!" splashed all over their boxes ever since I was a kid (when washday was pounding your shirt on a big rock in the stream out back).

WHAT'S NEW?

WHEN I WAS AT WCOL IN COLUMBUS IN THE LATE '60s IT WAS THE "NEW WCOL"
FOR 20 YEARS....WE COULD NEVER GIVE THE CALL LETTERS WITHOUT PREFACING THEM WITH "NEW" IT DROVE ME NUTS. THEIR RATIONALE WAS ,WELL WE KEEP PLAYING THE NEW HITS. ODDLY WE MOPPED UP THE MARKET.

WELL, JERRY - I CAN'T HELP BUT NOTICE THAT YOU WORK FOR "K-Nuu" (K-New"). I HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY CALL IT THAT...I'M JUST SAYIN'...

Welcome to the "new" world of "new"...when New York's 103.5 picked up the old WKTU call letters (those on this Board who remember the ORIGINAL WKTU... 8)), they were calling themselves "the NEW 'KTU" for almost two years, iirc...

I thought I remembered KTU calling itself "the new KTU" for years -- far longer than two years, I thought, after it's inception on 103.5 (in what, 1996?). Maybe my memory is haywire, but I thought they were doing that well after 2000. Not that Movin' should follow that ridiculous lead.

Precisely my point - Movin' has GOT TO do what it NEEDS to do and then shut up and let the ratings speak for themselves...'cos the listeners DO speak up, TRUST ME on that... 8) Let's put it this way, if Movin' is STILL callin' themselves something like, oh, let's say "the NEW Movin'", and it's fall 2009...if I were a listener, I would be thinking...HOW LONG, you know what I'm sayin??

So there is a difference in format between MAGIC 101 and the current V 101.1? I thought it was the same? Just a different choice of words. When it was Magic, They were JAMMIN' OLDIES and now it is THE R&B and OLD SCHOOL STATION. I just thought that CC wanted to eliminate the OLDIES name? When I listen to V101.1 (as well as Stockton's MEGA 100), it sure sounds like the same Jammin' Oldies of 9 years ago.

Magic 101 had a preponderance of Disco and dance-type music, with nothing past the mid-1980s
(basically a mid-1960s to mid-1980s vein)...whereas when it became V-101.1, it had more of the
'70s-'90s "Soul" (MUCH less Disco) and a current or two an hour - at least to my ears...

After two years of doing the "Saturday Night Jammin' Party"/"Club 101" shows on KHYL, I started
understanding what fictional-WKRP-DJ Johnny Fever, who hated Disco, must've gone through. LOL!

How about bringing back "the NEW KFRC" and playing what the original played when they started on 99.7 back in 1991? Movin' is a waste of air.

I could've sworn that an hour ago, while listening to KCBS 740, there
was a 15-second promo promoting "a new radio station, KFRC, and the
True Oldies Channel!..."

So KFRC may be gnu again?

IT'S K-NEWS....NOT K-NEW.......I KNOW CALLING KNUU K-NEWS IS A STRETCH BUT IT'S BEEN THAT WAY SINCE THEY CRANKED IT UP IN THE '70s.

Are you kidding, Jay? Where you been? That would be the recentlly "gnu" and TRUly pathetic KFRC-AM - featuring Scott Shannon's syndicated True Oldies Channel in low fidelity monaural sound

In my vain attempt at being faceitious, what I tried to convey in my earlier comment is:
How many times can we lump "KFRC" and "oldies" as "new"? ::)
