How low will WLEV ratings go ?

WLEV improved by a half point 12 plus. Yes. it may not seem like much. But it's a step in the right direction. With Christmas season around the corner, the fall book is guaranteed to be better. It's just a matter of station brass to make sure they come out of the holiday season focused and on target to take advantage for 2010. LEV will be fine.

Seltz- why dont you post the 25-54 numbers? So your plan is Christmas music ? What's the plan for the other 10 months ?

What I would really like to see LEV do this year is go old school and play the regular format until 12 noon 12/24 then go to Christmas music until Midnight 12/25. I think 36 hours would be good.

Problem with going old school is you get no help in the Fall Ratings period, which ends December 9 this year. Make no mistake, the Christmas strategy is about helping primarliy A/C radio stations in the fall book. This is the reason why many flip by the middle of November.

For whatever reason, WLEV's radio programming from a ratings standpoint has been "soft" for the past couple of ratings periods.
Flipping to Christmas gives them the chance to re group and come back even stronger after the holidays.

for whatever reason wlev has soft ratings ?

earth to seltzer come in
wlev's ratings have been in the tank for years not months
isn't anyone in allentown allowed to see the ratings anymore ?

could this be hurting wlev ? :
stale presentation circa 1989-1993. playing 3 formats at once. hawk and b104 lost their morning shows and both times wlev blew the chance to catch up. how many b104 promotions have they ripped off only to execute them poorly. no can do. like someone said on this board; good thing for county music over at citadel.

I don't know the players personally, nor by name in most cases. Overall, the WLEV product is quite sub par, especially considering how AC is used at work, and their history in that format. You used to hear them in all the stores, offices, etc. Not anymore. Someone mentioned that other stations had serious stumbles and WLEV didn't maximize competitive opportunities at those times. Not taking advantage of competitors problems is a major strategic blunder of itself. Of course, WLEV's sub par brand only helps a pathetic station like The Hawk do better. LEV has only beaten Hawk once in last 5 books. That was by a half share in winter '09. Every other book Hawk pummels LEV, including last fall's Christmas music book.

Anyone who reads any trades or boards knows how much Citadel has been under the gun, with Farid stealing $17 million a year, Judy making whatever she makes and not earning a dime of it either and Teddy Forstmann in total denial. Naturally those top level issues trickle down to the local station level where many market managers are SO paranoid about making even minor changes because they fear a couple clients will not like them and cancel. So they operate under self paralysis in the CYA mode. It could be this is the case. Or it could be that everyone on the strategic team is totally clueless and doesn't know what to do. More likely, somewhere in the middle.

Best guess is WLEV will have an OK fall book, depending on when they go Santa. Their 8.3 last fall was only good for 4th place in the 12+ race, while most ACs that do Santa win much bigger. If I were they, I'd do it when the first day of phase 3 begins. They have nothing to lose.

Seriously though, WLEV needs a lot of professional help. Right now, they're the WEEU of the Lehigh Valley.

Come on...WEEU of the Lehigh Valley? That's a little rough, especially when you have WGPA on the dial.

That being said, here's a thought: Perhaps some guidance from the north is in order.

Magic 93 always scores well in the WB/Scranton ratings.

What are they doing a better job of that WLEV is not?

THey battle a heritage CHR (KRZ) that scores well in adult demos.

Of course, they don't have a strong Classic Hits station there like 99.9 the Hawk. That's part of the problem.

On one side, you have a CHR station B 104 that leans very adult and has done a great job in workplaces. On the other side, the Hawk
Classic hits has lots of the traditional A/C music covered...Billy Joel, Elton John, Rod Stewart, etc..

The station has alot going for it: call letters, Lehigh Valley's Best Variety is a great positioner. And you have room to tweek your music

library one direction or another. But what direction? All 70s/80s is not the answer.
Can't argue with the signal.

There are 2 things I'd like on FM. First is AM 1340 WHAT, which will NEVER happen. The other is a clone of XM's The Bridge. Somebody try a format like The Bridge. Something for adults that aren't trying to dress and behave like their kids.

Let's not put WGPA in the discussion. They are a very different animal with substantially different issues and problems. WLEV is a full blowtorch signal with 20+ year history, so I stand by the comment that WLEV is the WEEU of the Lehigh Valley. Just like WEEU, their wounds are self inflicted. When a CHR like B104 focused on becoming more adult, WLEV did nothing. When Hawk launched, WLEV did nothing. Now, Hawk and B104 are the workplace/retail/office stations and the usage edge which should always go to the AC (IF they do it right) is gone. Self inflicted damage through lack of defensive tactics. You have to fight to maintain dominance. Even Christmas music, while giving WLEV a boost, doesn't move it ahead of 4th place!

Call letters and a "great positioning statement Lehigh Valley's best variety" are meaningless. Here's the fatal flaw in your statement: stations with REAL variety execute that premise all the time and they do not EVER have to say it on air. WLEV may say it, but they definitely do not deliver on the promise and especially in the ratings! You have the order backward. Put the music in order FIRST. WLEV's cume is good enough to increase TSL. But it doesn't happen. They are dead in the water. Sadly, a pathetic station like Hawk beats them at every turn.

Time for changes at WLEV because when the banks become the operators in a few months, the resultant adjustments will be ugly. Get your house in order on your own.

If the retail-shopping office useage is truly lost for WLEV; ie B 104 and the Hawk are fulfilling needs for workplaces in the Lehigh Valley, WLEV will have a difficult time winning those back without MAJOR MARKETING. That cost dollars, which Citadel or most companies do not have these days.

Sounds like WLEV is ready for a format change. FM talk, anybody (which also would cost $$$$)

Everyone seems to forget that when WLEV was "Soft AC" or "Soft Rock 100.7", they actually bested the Hawk in the coveted Adults 25-54. For several quarters. Morning show and all. AND, they were heard consistently in businesses, doctors offices, etc.

Just sayin'. Honestly, the move to go more "straight" AC when the current OM came on board seems to have moved the station in the wrong direction.
