How many are tired of local television news showing segments no one cares about?

As someone who has been in radio close to 25 years, one of the things i've
noticed in recent years is the "oversaturation" of local television news, even
in small markets like Wilmington, North Carolina, but more prevelant in the
larger markets like Raleigh/Durham.
A example of this was on Thursday Evening, May 10th, during a 6:00 P.M.
Newscast when they featured a segment on a "Rock, Paper, Scisorrs"
tournament that a Raleigh man was participating in, i'm sure there are
stories more important than that, especially in the 28th largest television
market in the U.S.
I understand they have to fill time, but there has to be other stories to
cover, it would be nice if television stations did maybe one hour instead
of 90 minutes, 2 hours or longer in the late afternoon/evening and cover
news that viewers want.

yes yes yes. That is not news. However it is 3 minutes of time filled with happy stuff, and thats what local news has become.

For local news, I may watch the first 5-7 minutes of tv news, and then read the newspaper to find out what tv couldn't cover because:

there was no exciting tape to show,
or the story may be too difficult for a 7 year old to understand adn we don't want confusion between spots,
or it was bumped for "rock paper siscors", or a "breaking news update on American Idol",
or there are no real journalists in the "newsroom" so they didnt understand that there was a real news story to report, one more important that Paris Hilton.

So this is our freedom of the press??? rock paper siscors?

Perfect example of this is our FOX station in San Antonio KABB's morning news show with them cramming American Idol down everyone's throats especially even after Haley Scarnado(sp?) from San Antonio lost in the Top 7 or 8. Yet they still blah blah blah about the rest of the American Idol contestants like they were all from San Antonio. I bet that none of the other local FOX stations go on and on about American Idol even if a contestant doesn't come from a hometown in their area.

FOX10 Phoenix is having a field day today. Jordin Sparks, who comes from Glendale, Arizona, is returning home today, visiting the FOX 10 AZ AM show this morning as well as a parade and concert at the Glendale sports/business park later today. Plus, if you watch, you can win tickets to the final show of American Idol!

I was watching WTVF-Nashville last weekend during the Saturday 6:00pm newscast and they promoted a story about an Arizona Republican booster who had mysteriously died and said the story would be coming up after the break. Obviously, it wasn't a local story, but it piqued my interest nonetheless. I stayed tuned and watched the "story" and it touched the bases of the story, but in the end, it was nothing more than a 2-minute promo for that night's episode of "48 Hours Mysteries". I was pretty upset with this action from what is Nashville's highest-rated and most reputable news station. I felt like Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" when his Little Orphan Annie decoder ring reveals nothing to him but an ad for Ovaltine. "It's a crummy commercial! Son of a b****!"
