How Many Channels Could A Cable System Have? (In Theory)

Just wondering with digital cable, let's say all digital and standard definition channels only, how many channels video channels could you put on it, in theory, I mean.

I realize there are some cable system that have music, which would be less and of course high def, but I was just wondering, in theory, if you have an up to date, modern cable company, with quality cable and converter boxes, how many digital video channels could you put on it?

You can a put a 1000 channels depending on their bandwidth and satellite systems. I remember in a town I use to live in, Comcast purchased a company and rebuilt the entire FM band system to put on 100 more channels. The only effect it would have is the HD quality, where OTA signals are not squeezed as Cable is which results in a more cleaner HD picture and artifacts.
