What is a CM-1110 Scott?

Channel Master Quantum 1110 VHF/UHF/FM yagi. Big sucker...I think the beam is more than 9 feet long, IIRC. And at that, it's not really a superior FM performer, with very bad front/back ratio. Once I figure out how I'm reconfiguring my roof after the DTV transition, it may give way to an APS-13 for FM and something smaller for high-band VHF TV.

Short answer is at least one per frequency. Closest thing to a blank spot on the dial is 107.3 but I often get one of about five stations on it. This is the Dayton, Ohio area.<P ID="signature">______________

Same short answer here in south central Indiana...a minimum of 1 on each frequency with some freqs like 101.1 blessed with 7 stations (Greater Cincinnati, Chicago, St Louis, Hazard,KY, a class A near Columbus,OH, a class A in northern IN & a station licensed to southern KY that serves Nashville,TN). Seems there's one in Detroit on 101.1 that doesn't show up frequently enough to be called a regular. Wish I had more 101.1's...

And that's just normal conditions! There are several more that can be heard under ideal weather. My radio dial has changed drastically even since '06 when I posted my first message. 97.1 and 99.5 are occupied by translators now, 101.9 has IBOC interference.

Good choice Scott...I took my Quantum antenna down about 2 years ago (all the local/semi-local V's are DT on UHF--I haven't watched an analog transmission in a long time). I now have a 7' CM dish for UHF, a 7-13 10 element yagi & an APS 13 for FM. Also have an APS 9 for a phase sense antenna on a separate rotor...The APS 13 and CM Stereo Probe 9 are both great antennas, but the Probe 9 was 25 years old & needed to be retired.

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, it's at least one per frequency with the following 3 exceptions:

102.5 is clear under dead-band, but there could be a little bit of WUMX Rome, NY fading in if you're patient. In summer, WBAZ Long Island, NY is heard almost all the time, and year round WTSS Buffalo fades in and out quite a bit, but is not "regular". Also, a local pirate occupies the frequency on weekends.

101.7 and 101.3 is now just WPDH (101.5) IBOC hash. When WPDH has the IBOC turned off, WBRK-Pittsfield, MA dominates 101.7, and WKCI-101.3 Hamden, CT does 101.3.

Many frequencies have two or more regulars, depending on antenna orientation.

I envy those of you who have many open channels for DXing!!

The Quantum will stay up at least through this summer's E-skip season so I can get a feel for what might be out there once my "usuals" on low-band VHF analog from Florida, Louisiana, and up through the plains states are gone. I'm hoping to see some Cuba and maybe even some Mexico to the south, I'll be interested to see whether I can log any of the remaining low-band VHF DTVs in the midwest, and I'm hoping for some interesting Canadians.

I figure that will hold my attention for one season...and then I'll probably retire the Quantum and reconfigure.

I did a big bandscan here last August that took several hours...basically rotating my antenna (an APS-9) once for each frequency, 88.1 to 107.9. I logged about 195 stations (not including HD subchannels), including a number of new ones....from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Ontario, and one tentative logging from Illinois.

Parked in the driveway in my car, I usually can hear around 50 stations. About 20 of them are local.

Here in northwest Florida under normal conditions and with a rotatable directional antenna I can get around 200 stations. Several frequencies 3 stations per is easy depending on where the antenna is pointed. New Orleans / Baton Rouge is the usual western limit, Birmingham to the north, many Georgia to the northeast, Jacksonville and Gainesville to the east / southeast.

I was in Jackson, MI, for three years in the late 80's, and I can attest to this type of reception. The band was close to packed with a station on almost every frequency. By rotating my antenna, I could get multiple stations on some frequencies, so the total was well over 100. With modern adaptive IF and a good antenna - who knows? possibly a station on every frequency!

There are parts of North Carolina that are in the same situation - just about every frequency occupied. Although this was decades ago on a tube receiver in an attic of a great aunt and uncle's house.

Of course the late 80's was way pre-IBOC jamming. The reception I noted was the normal, everyday, no skip type of stuff. I don't remember a lot of skip up there, maybe I was living there in a solar minimum or something.

The 300 mile stuff is mainly on full class C stations - 100kW off of 2000' towers over relatively flat terrain. I also got an assist from the caprock - although it worked pretty well from Plano to Tulsa prior to a local 92.9 signing on under really shady circumstances - but that is another topic. When in Florida, 300 mile stuff was pretty common but so was skip. I did try to separate out skip from reliable in reports. But when I was receiving 300 mile reception in TX, it was for music, not for the hobby of DX. I had no interest in reception that was not absolutely reliable, because it was only for entertainment.

That's one thing I like about this area of the state. There are several stations nearby, but for the most part they're distant stations which can usually be nulled out or overpowered during tropo or Es events. I've even heard (but couldn't ID) another station override my 7-mile-distant 50kw WNWN.

IBOC has dampered things slightly. 90.5, 91.7 and 102.1 are the biggest IBOC offenders in my area. Makes DX'ing on first adjacents a little more difficult.

Besides that. South-Central Michigan is a very good DX location. I can hear 200+ mile reception to Northern Michigan and Ontario even during the deadest of dead-band conditions. Even 242-mile distant CIBU (94.5) Wingham and 314-mile distant CHAY (93.1) Barrie is possible with just a little enhancement to Ontario.

At my place (Fredericksburg, VA) I receive 69 FM stations with signal strength range from very weak and barely listenable to strong local, including one HD-2 subchannel, all under normal atmospheric conditions. When FM DX occurs, the total amount usually includes southern VA, Hampton Roads area, eastern NC, all the way up to southern NJ.
