How many HD stations can you now get in Providence?

Some people over at the New York board are arguing about HD. It just made me wonder how many HD stations can a person receive if they are in the Providence area. Can someone with an HD radio count them up for me? Thanks.

A.M.: 550, 920.
F.M.: 93.3-1, 93.3-2, 94.1-1, 94.1-2. (I am not near the radio until tomorrow but it used to receive 92.3-1, 105.1-1 as well as 101.5-1 & 101.5-2 but 101.5 wasn't running it as of a few days ago).

I wish the A.M. HD stations would stop transmitting it. As for the F.M. multiplex channels, if you find regular radio boring, formats such as JokeJoke (101.5-2, if it ever comes back on) will make you catatonic. 93.3-2 is Smooth Jazz & 94.1-2 is hard rock.

No longer transmitting in HD:
630, 1290, 106.3. As for 102.7, I don't THINK it's transmitting in HD but I can't receive it in E.P..

I hope this helps.

105.1's has been off for a while. 101.5's HD2 changed formats to classic rock a few months back, but has been off for a couple weeks. I think 94.1's HD2 is more of an alternative format than hard rock. Though not a Providence station, 89.3 WUMD is also once again running HD, with no second channel.

So if a person were to buy an HD radio in this city (which I'm not. I'm just curious). They would gain a grand total of TWO new stations?

Oh Boy. ::)

THREE if 101.5-2 comes back on! That's a 50% increase! :p

HAhahaha ;D

They ought to go all-oldies on the 101.5 HD2. Considering the original audience for Oldies B101 has pretty much disappeared and the HD1 has gone all Classic Rock/Hits, it couldn't hurt to go all oldies on the HD2. It might start selling some a couple of HD Radios for once.

Not to get into a Sirius XM Debate, but if some of you get excited over receiving two or three new channels, you would end up having a freaking orgasm with a Sirius/XM radio in your hand. Over 100 crystal clear channels with every kind of format that you could even think of.

Well, sort of crystal clear. I've been very annoyed at the low bitrate that the channels are encoded at for years now. Its quality is less than a 96k MP3 equivalent (they actually encode using an AACplus codec I believe). Anyway, I am an audiophile and I get annoyed very easily... the high end rolls off somewhere around 12kHz I think. FM radio generally has better sounding audio than satellite, especially HD which has full dynamic range. Oh well.

Sirius less than a 96k MP3? Really? I never thought it was that low. I've never had a problem with the sound. I am pretty picky with sound as well. Makes me feel like an idiot for encoding My Stern Shows at 320k. What am I wasting space for nothing? Oh well... screw it. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I am saving at the best quality MP3 I can.

92.3-1 was also on today. I tried 550 & the radio couldn't lock on using its internal antenna. The HD light kept flashing. I couldn't receive 1030 on it either. The radio is in East Providence.

I love Sirius/XM. Tons of channels, no ads, crystal clear, and most of its tight and well produced.

Nationwide less than 16% of AM stations are even licensed for IBOC (HD Radio). About 1/2 of those were ever active. Many are turning it off due to interference problems with not just other stations but also with themselves!

FM - a little better but not really all that much interest by folks in purchasing.

iPods, etc. may have pre-empted the whole HD scene beyond the satellite services....I mean satellite SERVICE, it being now down to really only one.
