How many hosts are left?

... you won't like what they do.
Hey pal, don't make assumptions about other people -- it's unprofessional. You don't know anything about me. Please stick to expressing YOUR opinions.

You have been VERY transparent about what you like and what you don't like. I can easily put together a profile. You NEVER mention radio stations aimed at black people, so I can assume WLIB isn't among your presets. I've never seen you talk about Elvis Duran. So you probably don't usually listen to Z 100. This is what professional broadcasters do. We interview listeners and develop a profile of them. We listen very carefully. As long as you talk about your likes and dislikes, you're telling us a lot about you.

Really? Most professional broadcasters don't spend so much time posting on message boards. Why are you so obsessed by what I think?

Why are you so obsessed by how much I post? I'm simply discussing my favorite subject. You'd be surprised how many professionals post on message boards and Facebook.

One job of a professional broadcaster is to listen to the audience. I have many ways to do that, but one way is to visit message boards. Another way is through social media. But your posts on this board tend to be strictly about your personal likes and dislikes, whereas mine look at the broader subject of radio in general.

I didn't say it to impress. I said it because YOU said I don't know why young people don't listen to news/talk. I do. You're also approaching this topic as a listener, not as a professional. As I said, if radio stations go after that younger demographic, you won't like what they do. Right now, there are music stations in NYC that are largely all talk in the morning, and a lot of young people listen. If you were more tolerant of the music they played, or the topics they discussed, you might enjoy it. Or you might not. Talk radio isn't limited to talking about conservative politics, and it's not limited to the three AM stations you identified. You didn't talk about WNYC or the other non-coms that program talk.

If Rush changed his act, it might alienate his current fan base. Older audiences don't adapt well to change. And younger audiences aren't as likely to accidentally tune in their grandparent's radio station. The choice of broadening the programming on AM talk stations to appeal to younger audiences isn't very likely since young people, raised in the digital age, won't put up with the bad audio quality of AM. You didn't mention that either.

If you'll notice, the majority of the news talk hosts getting syndicated deals the last few years have been younger, conservative hosts. At least the companies are finally TRYING something different.

The only one I've seen in the last two years has been Jonathan Brandmeier. Not that young to me.

Dana Loesch? She's younger than me, and I'm not that old for a talk guy.

Young people will listen to talk. Even conservative talk. But they're not going to listen to it on AM in most parts of the country.

I like Dana Loesch's show, but it doesn't seem to be doing very well on the syndication market. I see about 25 affiliates, almost none carrying the show live (where she competes against Limbaugh, so no huge surprises here). She's only carried in one of the top ten markets (WSB/Atlanta), and that's it's only one hour at 2am...

Other large-ish markets carrying Dana Loesch:
#17 San Diego (KNWZ/Coachella, a class D AM station after dark - calling this San Diego is a real stretch)
#19 Denver (KLZ/Denver)
#22 St. Louis (KFTK, Loesch's original station before syndication)
#33 Orlando (WDBO)

I think this is illustrative of where talk PDs find themselves. It's hard for a PD to justify changing from a long time host like Clark Howard or Michael Savage to Dana Loesch. Most of the stations on my list are the second or third talk station in a market.

That doesn't meant that Loesch won't break through some day, it just means she hasn't yet.

She has a little traction. It's obviously an uphill battle, but at least someone is trying something new.

It looks like Dana will be replacing Rush on WIBC, Indianapolis in July.
