How many talk shows are canned?

I'm curious to know the number of talk shows out there that are fully pre-recorded before distribution. That includes shows that give out a phone number so callers can leave a message, only to be called by the host at a later time. I know The Money Pit, Handel on the Law, Real Estate Today, Animal Radio (an independently syndicated show). I suspect Gun Talk, but can't confirm that. I've heard Clark Howard will pre-record shows too by marathoning callers on Monday and Tuesday.

It seems this is more likely with advice or "ask the expert" kind of shows that don't require any prior knowledge of what a previous conversation or caller said.

Whenever I come across one of these type shows, I almost always doubt it's live as I'm hearing it.

Depends on the station. If they are giving out a phone number, more than likely they are live somewhere. Kim Kommando may be an exception, she does mention the specific times to call. If you are going to delay a show, it's best to delay something where the subject matter is somewhat evergreen. That could be Clark Howard, dave Ramsey, etc. Mike McConnell's "Weekend" show from WLW is delayed around the country, and often by the originating station, but he is live 12-3pm Saturdays.

Yeah. I think each show I listed falls into that category. It's just "Call in with your questions on this subject." Handel on the Law is an easy one to set up, as it's nothing but Bill answering legal questions for 3 hours. No specified topics or anything that requires a caller to listen to a radio.

They may be live in studio, but not live on the air. Some of these shows are distributed on CDs or via FTP. They might even say something like "And you can call us any time. Our phone number is active all week long." I wouldn't know how such a show is produced so that callers can phone in, but I'd imagine a producer calls back the callers and has them speak during an arranged studio time with the hosts.

Mike McConnell is delayed in most of his cities, but that seems to be the case with a lot of these live weekend programs, as they conflict with one-another or have to get out of the way for brokered programming. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these weekend syndicated shows have less than 15% of their affiliates actually carrying them live.
