How much Christian music?

I was surprised to a hear a beautiful instrumental version of the "Hallelujah Chorus" on WKQC. I haven't listened to the station much but that's certainly not one of the standards you expect.

The version by The Boston Pops Orchestra is in rotation on many iHeart and other stations. It's quite dramatic and rousing!

At one time, playing religious Christmas music was frowned on by secular stations until Christmas Eve. But when "A Very Special Christmas" LP to benefit Special Olympics came out in 1987, producer Jimmy Iovine had a few religious songs among the mostly secular titles. "O Holy Night" by Stevie Nicks, "Gabriel's Message" by Sting and "Coventry Carol" by Alison Moyet were too good to ignore and Nicks and Sting were too important not to play them. Sting even did a video which got frequent airing by MTV.

So the rule ended. Now secular Christmas stations play a mix of secular with religious songs. The ratio may go a bit higher as Christmas Day approaches. But even in November, religious songs are in the mix.

(And the reverse is also true. Christian Contemporary stations play 50% or more secular holiday tunes. Their listeners want Holly Jolly Christmas and Silver Bells too.)

The great thing about Christmas music on the radio... it's the time of the year when San Diego Adult Contemporary KyXy plays Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Michael Buble, and other stars of the Standards. I know you have to enjoy that also, Vchimp.

I would, but so far I only seem to get one good song followed by either a bad song or a long commercial break, so I keep having to go back to whatever I listen to the rest of the year.

At home I listen to all those people anyway online. And it's not a simple matter to jump around to various Christmas stations. One makes me listen to a commercial every single time I switch to it.

"Hallelujah Chorus" was one of many songs by choirs I've heard in the past hour on Serenade Radio in England. All but one, I believe, had a Christian message. There were also solo artists such as Mahalia Jackson. It appears this will be a daily feature from 1 to 2 P.M. Eastern until the big day. The station has mixed in some Christmas tunes up until now but today it's all Christmas.
