How much longer will WXRP stay AAA? What is the next format on 101.9FM

With the article on how Emmis is losing money with this new AAA WXRP station what will the next format be? Will WXRP flip soon? What will they flip to?

i don't think "True Oldies" would work, not with CBSFM back in the "oldies" game the way it is...

I seriously doubt that *WRXP* will flip formats anytime soon (wait until well after the PPM begins its reign), and even if they did, I doubt they'd return to an elevator music-type format like Smooth Jazz.

scott Shannon's "True Oldies"

Scott Shannon's "True Oldies" already appears in nthe New York City market (well, sort of) on 95.5-FM-WPLJ's HD3 channel. "True Oldies" & WPLJ are both owned by Citadel Broadcasting. There'd be no chance that the "True Oldies" format would wind up anywhere else in New York.

If Emmis wanted an older-skewing station, they had the playing field to themselves with smooth jazz on 101.9. I don't think they would go to war against a heritage station like CBS-FM.

It would be great to see someone launch a CHR and go up against Z100, but I doubt Emmis would do that and risk eating further into Hot 97's audience.

Would it shock anyone to see Emmis do a Spanish format to go up against 97.9?

Spanish radio is already "overkill" but something tells me that this could be a possibility.

I think there's a greater possibility of hearing a foreign language format soon on your beloved Pulse 87 than on 101.9.

We all know you hate Pulse, there's no need for the constant reminders/sarcasm.

now THAT would be interesting (would give Pulse MORE exposure in the NYC area - i know someone who ACTUALLY LISTENS to that station sometimes.... :) )

Pulse 102...or they could drop the Pulse and try Energy 102- The Station That Makes You Move or Energy 102- Move to It.

"Pulse 102" - that has a NICE ring to it (interesting thing here, when Mix 102.7 was around, one of the slogans that THEY used was "Move to It" or "Move to the Mix", SO who knows?....)

You know...there's always going to be supporters and "haters". That's okay; that's just the way of the world. I've certainly dealt with my share of hate and actually still do (if anyone had visited the Philly board months ago, it was there.). If I have to take the brunt of things for the sake of dance music, so be it.

If it wasn't for the crap that I'd dealt with in college, I don't think I would have gone through all of the efforts of pushing forward a coalition or fighting for a music that I feel is worthy of being part of the mainstream (and is such in Europe) but is misunderstood or "hated" by those that are "corporate" in running things.

Having said that, would I want Pulse to get a higher frequency...YES! Do I still believe a current based rhythmic station could work regarding revenue and ratings? YES! However, the key here is MONEY and based on that, I can't foresee such a move happening. And based on what I see as "corporate ignorance", I don't see ANY other station attempt a current dance format in the near future, which is why I had thought Emmis would go the Spanish route or perhaps "rethink" jazz? Heck, if CBS could rethink things to bring back the oldies format, anything is possible.

Not only do I want Pulse to do good...I NEED for them to do good. There's a bigger stake here for dance music in general. And there are those in here that know that. I WANT more markets involved with dance (Las Vegas had recently launched....KVBE). Me personally, I want New England (Boston, Providence/New Bedford) and, yes...Philly.

Though I have to say this.....honestly, I don't know which station has had more criticial comments...WRXP? Or WKTU when it launched back in '96?

So....what is it about WRXP that has had people criticizing?

Ummm...let's start with the fact almost NO ONE is listening to it!

Is Emmis completely incapable of doing market research?

This is their second failed major market launch in a row!

As far as the "next format" is concerned -- I predict it'll be one of the following:
--Smooth Jazz
--Modern Rock
--Talk
--Variety Hits
--Some sort of Spanish-language format

I listened for 10 minutes once in the morning to Matt Pinfield. Maybe it's just me but his voice.... maybe he needs to catch his breath more often? I wasn't feeling it. In fact, I listened to it for a grueling hour today and this is by far, worse than K-Rock. I still don't see New York City as being receptive to this idea, format or station. It's too laid back for a busy city. It reminds me of Key West's US 104.1 in being eclectic, classic rock, laid back.

If there is one thing missing in NYC it is New rock/Older rock. IE many artists K-rock has never played where as most other markets have.. I am not starting a list again I will be here all night. however I will say one song, no one plays which is I can ride my bike with no handlebars... I hear it elsewhere in the Northeast way, way too much.

They could always move HOT 97 up the dial and put back country where it always belonged....97.1. They might even consider bringing back the WYNY call letters. How about taking on Lite FM and bringing back the "middle of the road" WYNY?
