How much of each decade would you play an hour on AC?

Keep in mind, too, that a lot of smaller and medium sized markets (I can think of Charlotte, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Nashville immediately off hand) don't have a Hot AC.

I think Hot ACs are extremely rare in the Southeast, cause too much of the HAC target listens to country - I don't think there's a real Hot AC (of significant size) in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Northern Florida, or Mississippi

I would say Star 92.1 WMYB in Myrtle Beach, SC sounds very Hot AC as they air many currents which are Hot AC. They are labeled as AC but don't sound AC at all. Check them out at www.star921.net and tell me what you guys think they should be labeled as.

My limited knowledge is that the Hot AC's in the medium/maybe larger midwest markets are more conservative and play more 80s (this was referenced somewhere on this site), and it seems further out west and in the bigger markets they are more like Adult CHR. I could be wrong, but this is what I've gathered.

@Ken, I agree, Star is Hot AC.

Yeah, a lot of Hot AC's have almost morphed in to Adult Top 40's recently.

Charlotte technically has a hot AC. WLNK reports as mainstream, but that's ludicrous because we already have two of those. However, WLNK has been mostly a talk station for the past few years, but they never really gave up music.

Actually, WLNK is now mostly talk in the morning and afternoons only - they seem to program from the Hot AC chart conservatively, but would be a unique hot AC as they play a little 70s music and a lot of 80s.

WLNK only plays ONE current on the entire Hot AC chart - there's no way it's "Hot AC" right now

I know you keep posting this for some reason, but the "Hot" in "Hot AC" doesn't mean "loud" - it means "current"

Norfolk has 94.9 The Point, which does decently ratings-wise.

^Oh yeah (whoops...) - but as far as the Southeast (in decent sized markets), it's basically The Point/Norfolk, Star 94/Atlanta, and a couple on the Gulf Coast I think (and maybe Savannah?)

Savannah used to have Mix 102.1 (WZAT), but it's sports talk now. Was a Cumulus station.

EDIT: I forgot about 107.9 there being H/AC now, but that freq has never worked really...

Wait ... what? I thought they were conservative. I don't mean WDUV/WWNU/WFEZ conservative, but more like AC used to be ten years ago.

Well, there needs to be some kind of terminology distinction. And I certainly wouldn't use "soft AC" except maybe for a station like WLYF Miami.

It's just a matter of time before all ACs play the Katy Perrys of this world because that's what 35-54 year-old women want to hear.

Katy's songs are more AC friendly than the other pop superstars such as Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, etc. While they are a little aggressive, "Teenage Dream", "California Girls", "Hot N Cold", "Firework" fit better than something like "Hold It Against Me" or "We R Who We R." GaGa has had a little AC airplay, but not a lot and hasn't gone far on the AC chart, surprisingly.

I guess I'd agree - I just think "AC" was coined to mean "Adult Contemporary", and there are plenty of adults that like hearing 90s hits by NIrvana and Stone Temple Pilots - there are CHRs that sound like Rhythmics, and there are CHRs that sound like Hot ACs - Alternatives that sound like Active Rock and Alternatives that sound like Modern AC - so I'm just not sure what the big issue is with ACs that have a harder edge to them vs. ACs that have a softer edge
