How much ROCK can the Valley Handle?

Has phoenix always been known as a rock city? I ask this because it seems we have many rock stations in the valley. Do you think they will all remain in their format for the entire year or do you think some change is coming down the road?

93.3 KDKB - Rock
97.9 KUPD - Active Rock
100.7 KSLX - Classic Rock
103.9 - KEDJ - Modern Rock

And also there's 103.1 for commercial-free classic rock, and 101.5 on late nights and weekends with a rock format.

I think they could easily combine the three 'Sandusky' stations into two.: Let KUPD play the harder stuff KDKB plays, let KSLX have the lighter stuff they play, and just toss the light Matchbox 20 / Blinkstreet crapola that currently plays on KDKB. This gives you a 96kw frequency to play with in a top 15 market. It should be utterly unacceptable for a station of this power to be scoring ratings like the 1.8 they just put up on the board.

I think KUPD should definately remain, but get back to playing more Pantera,Mudvayne, etc. They need to dump some of the tired alternative songs they currently have in rotation. They sounded so much better when they were heavier in the mid to late 90's. KDKB and KSLX should basically merge into one kick ass classic rocker. Something like KGB in San Diego would be very cool. I agree something really needs to happen here, and it will.

From what I hear, there is no impetus for gumpdusky to change or to sell to an owner who cares: the stations are paid for and even with the dismal arbs they keep billing enough for the owners to collect their quarterly 750K .

However...if they did get the urge to sell......who takes them?

-Emmis is sitting on a huge bundle of cash after selling off their TV stations. Can they make it with a stand-alone in this market?

-CBS Radio , to bulk up their group to 6 FM's

- Bonneville, who would kill one of the three rockers (most probably KDKB) and flip it to simulcast one of their AM's much like they did in DC and SLC (KMVP most likely, moving the Suns and/or Dbacks over and letting N/T KTAR get back to its roots). KSLX survives since Bonneville likes classic rock, KUPD's sound would probably be land somewhere between where they and KDKB currently are.

Wouldn't you put 98.7 The Peak into the rock catagory as
well? Sure they play a few AC titles each hour, but 60%-
70% of their music can be heard on KSLX or other Classic
Rock/Classic Hits stations.

And yes, Phoenix is a very rock-friendly city. If you
count The Peak and remember 101.5 was Alternative up until
last month (and still plays rock on weekends), that makes
six rock stations.

I have no insider information so all this is speculation, but I do know...

...that Sandusky GM Chuck Artigue is set to retire soon. That may or may not mean changes are afoot for their cluster, but a new GM could certainly bring in his or her own ideas.

I like the suggestion that KDKB and KSLX combine into on great classic rocker. I might keep KDKB for the heritage calls and do something different with 100.7, but the concept makes a lot of sense.

It's hard to believe KSLX has been classic rock for 20 years. Time flies....
