How not to do morning radio...

...listen to Kid & Ruben for lots of note-taking. Yesterday was an excruciating two hours of jocks laughing at themselves, and potty humor. Did we really need on-air discussion about what Kid's body has trouble digesting? And, in that two hours I think I heard three songs, between the incessant jabbering and the commercials. There was definitely no "jamming" going on at 101.5!

Hearing them back on the air is a stark reminder of why I stopped listening to them when they were on the air before. Is it that hard to find an urban-leaning morning show that actually plays music?

Note to the PD - KISS had a teen demo that fed K & R's numbers. Yet 101.5 came out-of-the-box playing older music in an attempt to skew towards the upper-urban demos. Time will tell if K & R's potty humor will be a good fit.
 
Morning shows are less about music and more about "entertainment". Remember, radio is nothing more than a large collection of imitators: Stern had great success in this market doing nothing but talk for 4-5+ hours every day, so that became the trend in morning drive--even on FM (music) stations. Every bit is lifted from everybody else, one crappy morning show does "battle of the sexes" so they all do it, one morning show does a dating game so they all do it, it's simple really.

"Potty Humor" on a hip-hop station is to be expected and is probably encouraged--why not, the music talks about doing unspeakable things to women, while doing drugs, getting drunk and other various felonious behaviors, so why are you surprised by this?

Honestly, I've never understood the hype around Kid and Ruben, then again, this valley is filled with shows that are pretty underwhelming.
 
I could care less what there morning show is cbs screwed up big time flipping to urban and not back to an alternative station!!!It is just a matter of time till 101 gets flipped again!!!

Are you taking notes for the morning show you'll never get? Cool.  ::) I heard the topic you're talking about and it didn't bother me at all. I thought it was quite funny. And K&R isn't all about potty humor. All the years I have listened to their show, yesterday might've been the first time I've ever heard them execute potty humor. And if we're talking Howard Stern here, that's all his show is about! Potty humor, porn and girls. And he was the biggest morning show to ever hit the valley. I remember when Howard started his satellite career, he had one of his goons pass gas all day long on one of his channels. Funniest thing I've ever heard in my life. I'm sure K&R will do just fine on JamZ.
 
I've got no beef with Kid and Ruben. I wish them well, but I have to point out a disagreement with one particular quote:

"And he (Howard Stern) was the biggest morning show to ever hit the valley."

When a morning show can be dominant for about 13 years, as Bill Heywood was on KOY, then you can talk about the biggest morning show to ever hit the valley. The first go-round with Jonanthon Brandmeier on KZZP in the 80s was pretty strong, too. Not to mention Tim & Willy, W. Steven Martin, Pratt on KUPD, and Beth & Bill (in their heyday)....

Stern got good numbers -- no question. But there was dominant, quality AM drive in this town long before he got here.

Let me help you:

I Couldn't care less who their morning show is. CBS screwed up big time by flipping to Urban. Why not flip back to an Alternative format of some type? It's only a matter of time until 101 flips again.

Come on people this is radio, let's start hiring people who can read and write.
