How reliable are the NYC HD radio signals?

I'm thinking of getting the Insignia portable HD radio ($50 at Best Buy). Are the NYC HD stations broadcasting at full power, and how reliable are they (i.e. no drop outs). I live in Essex County, NJ. I want to use the portable player while I'm out jogging and also be able to plug it into the aux input on my car stereo to listen while driving. I am mostly interested in listening to the country station on WLTW HD2.

Spend a little more money and get a portable Internet radio unit, then proceed to plug in the Internet streams of your favorite HD radio channels, such as Country Road: http://radiotime.com/station/s_52457/Country_Road_1067.aspx

You'll find yourself at an advantage when Internet radio is one day the norm in car stereos, and HD radio goes the way of its cousin, Zune.

"My Cousin Zune"... sounds like a bad Russell Brand film. :p

I bought an Insignia HD Radio for a little over $200. from Radio Shack in Howard Beach, Queens back in January of 2008. All I can say is where I live in southeast Queens all the HD stations come in nice and clear including the AM HD stations, WFAN, WOR,WCBS, WINS and WQEW. WABC used to broadcast in HD.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

The Insignia portable works quite well. Using it makes it clear to me that the delicate HD radio signals are significantly easier to receive outdoors than at home or in a building. I've been able to get fairly consistent reception of HD2 and HD3 stations 30-40 miles away from midtown Manhattan when listening to this radio outdoors. But there usually are occasional brief dropouts if I am moving around with it.
It has been disappointing inside a car. As mentioned above, HD radio signals seem to be diminished when they have to pass through enclosed areas.
As the Zune HD will no longer be produced, I believe the Insignia portable is once again the only portable HD radio still being made.
I do like WLTW HD2. Country music, good personalities and few commercials is fine with me. I like the fact that they highlight some of the classic country artists during the mornings. But I wonder if the original poster in Essex County can get a decent signal from the locally programmed Thunder Country, on 106.3

Yes, I can get Thunder 106 perfectly on my home stereo, but in the car the reception is not great. I picked up the Insignia portable radio at Best Buy yesterday (it's on sale for 39.99 this week). The reception is great compared to my Creative player with FM tuner. With the Insignia even the analog stations come in clearer. I brought it in my car and connected it to the line-in jack on my car stereo. Reception is better than I thought it would be. The trick seems to be to keep the line-in cord spread out so that it can pull in the signals better (the cord acts as the antenna). There are only occasional dropouts when driving through low spots or between some buildings. I'm about 15 miles west of NYC.

Squeezebox is a great investment, as well as a Zune HD :D Nothing wrong with those gadgets.

How am I supposed to get an internet connection while out jogging or in the car? For that reason these gadgets would be useless to me.

Zune HD has a built-in radio, so it can receive OTA signals. However, the fact that Microsoft is discontinuing the hardware line (and more than likely support for it as a result) might be a problem with that gadget.
