How soon can you make the competition "go Christmas"?

In one of my markets the competing station actually pulled the trigger TODAY on "all Christmas music all the time" to get the jump on my station...now they're stuck playing ELMO AND PATSY AND BURL IVES RECORDS UNTIL THE END OF DECEMBER!

Bwah ha ha ha ha ha..

My station ran a very well constructed promo that basically said "Beginning the day after halloween..we're getting into the holiday spirit early..and we will give you 100 percent christmas music any time you like. All of your favorite Holiday songs are loaded and ready to play. As soon as the "sprits" have left, we'll have the spirit of the season all day and all night. We know you love the music of the holidays, and you'll be able to hear them anytime..just listen and we'll give them to you starting Saturday at midnight..from KXYZ"

The station across town..went ahead and started THIS afternoon...

BUT my station WAS offering 100 percent HOLIDAY favorites!
They WERE loaded and ready to play
The music CAN play all day and all night
You CAN HEAR THEM ANYTIME
If you listen they WILL GIVE THEM TO YOU
starting Saturday at midnight.....

They are registering listeners to win a loaded iPod FULL OF HOLIDAY FAVORITES..while they continue playing the regular format....but not the competition..they're stuck now

he he he..sometimes this business is still fun!

How Soon Can You Make Me Gag?

Anyone who tunes in "all Christmas" before Thanksgiving Day should be subjected to endless, high-volume repetition of "Jingle Bells" by The Barking Dogs, 24/7, through Orthodox Christmas night.

Any station who goes "all Christmas" before Thanksgiving Day should have their license revoked as not operating in the "public interest, convenience, or necessity". At the very least, their ratings should have an asterisk that says *"People don't really listen to this crap, they're subjected to it by store owners and office nazis."

FYI "Tusker" the last of the famous "Barking Dogs" group passed away on August 9, 1988..He was a Jack Russell/Labrador mix, and was the tenor of the group. Details of his life along with some rather graphic details of just "how" they made the dogs yelp on cue are available at the smoking gun dot com.

Hey Jeff,

We won't start any Christmas stuff untill after the Thanksgiving turkey is history...or is that "hash?" Even then, we'll ease into it, though we have a couple of spots currently running for "The Nutcracker," (which sounds painful) and "It's a Wonderful Life" Wanna make us a promo to that effect?

Noon Christmas Eve and all day Christmas day will be all Christmas Music, which is underwritten.

NFVG,

I know you're just the messenger (as in "don't shoot...") but do you think
you could do this promo for KOOL-FM:

"All right, we listened and we heard you loud and clear...Christmas music
is hereby suspended until December 23! Now back to your favorite songs
from the '60s and '70s on 94-point-five KOOL-FM."

And then convince PD Kris it is what he ordered for immediate airing? ;)

Yeah I am just the messenger there..did they go full blown Christmas Music already? or is it stilll just wekends? That stuff really burns out quick..might be better to..say go ahead and go full blown for a few days just to jump star it..BUT, then sprinkle in regular format, and more and more regular format until Christmas eve. I really like my pal Chuck's station in Texas. It will be a far more listenable, and enjoyable Holiday format..the kind that is nice to have on with a fireplace, and a good dog, and some eggnogg. I am hoping he'll allow me to do full blown voicetracking for him for the days before Christmas and Christmas eve..really a good station. Streams too...give them a listen..One of the finest examples anywhere of a really good LPFM!

I'm blushing.

The Christmas music promo you did for us is great. It appeals to my very warped sense of humor. It starts running the day after Thanksgiving, as does a light sprinkling of Holiday music. The frequency of Christmas music will gradually increase as we get closer to the big day, but I've found the even then, much more than five or six songs per hour mixed in with our normal playlist can get tiresome.

We will go all Christmas music from noon on Christmas Eve until about 11:00 PM Christmas Day. That is a decision based mostly on the fact that someone wants to underwrite it, and to be honest, people do seem to enjoy it. At least, they say they do. Then it is back to our regular playlist without any more of it until next year. Just like egg nog, a little of this stuff goes a long way.

In the past, I've actually had listeners thank me for not making them O.D. on too much Holiday cheer. And yes, Jeff, I have plans for you during the season.
