How to get m3u files to crossfade on usb stick

Many of the present decoders have fail back on usb in case the net connection is lost. This particular one is the Barix 500.The USB kicks in and the m3u files play but there is 5-6 secs of silence between songs, like tracking a CD.Kinda annoying on air ,but hey at least you're on air.Do any of you have a solution for this? Getting them to crossfade would sure sound better. The files have to be saved as playlist m3u. Thanks

We used to have a CD at CBS FM that was the emergency backup. It was a data CD with 3 hours of "mixed" music and bumpers that could be triggered into the audio path via the Burk and a Broadcast Tools switcher.

I would suggest making an hour or two of programming in a single file to place on the stick so it defaults to that.

Good solution, something i thought of as well.Seems like there would be an exe.file that would allow the crossfade .don;t know if the old spyder player usb version did that or not or if the Barix 500 would execute the command.Right now you load the mp3's on the usb, select all, enque in winamp, files go the the winamp playlist where you save as m3u back to the usb stick..Just wished they would overlap like they do in winamp...thanks mike

wgliradio has the right idea, just make a big mp3 with all the songs crossfaded. if you're triggering it often my advice would be to just make a new one weekly so the listeners don't get annoyed with the same sequence :) I made my shoutcast streaming server backup files by just ripping the station stream and editing it.

Blowing my own trumpet for a moment - I will hopefully have a simple solution to this sort of request... A simple automated player that'll auto-cue+sequence based on an audio threshold rather than a defined cue-point. Essentially it'll be a drag 'n' drop player as well as an M3U shuffler.

5 or 6 seconds between cuts is a long time.
You can probably tighten that up a bit by editing the files.
Put .1 sec of silence at the beginning of the file and forcing a faster fade-down at the end of the file. End the file as soon as the audio is gone.
I've done that using Adobe Audition. My mp3 files play back with only a fraction of a second between cuts. Not at all annoying.

I don't know if you're planning this for a stream or a station's main audio so some of what I'm about to suggest may be better for one than the other.

The one long file pre-segued file will work well with the exception if you become plagued by network issues. If the file always begins at the same point each time it drops to the stick your listeners will be driven away as quick as the 5 seconds of dead air between tracks.

At one station I used a Titus Labs MLW series audio switcher with a cd changer (later an iPod) fed into the backup audio source. The box did the switching between the studio and backup audio on its own and it worked quite well.

The emergency CD works well too. I know one station that had a demo CD from one of the network providers with segued tracks and it was either played at the studio or from the engineering room. As long as it can be brought into the air chain it will work.

I've never tried a specific software approach by perhaps Charlie's player will do the trick for you.

Thanks for the input. When the unit looses the net connection, the usb starts at the beginning of the files, can be irritating.Maybe Charlie will find a solution, otherwise i can just do like wgli suggested or even have a backup at the xmtr with a switch.Getting a small back up generator at the studio site will help, too. We seldom lose power at the studio and the xmtr site has backup so it's never down. But we've had lots of crazy weather this year. Not as much fun as processing:)
